There’s a young man I used to know. Brilliant guy. First class from Obafemi Awolowo University. Well-spoken and sharp, the kind of person who walks into a room and commands attention before he even opens his mouth. He had a plan after graduation, which was to secure a job at a top-tier firm, six figures from day one, corner office energy, & the whole package.
The whole plan and goal made sense in his head.
But here’s what eventually happened. He spent fourteen months saying no. No to the “small” roles. No to the startup that couldn’t afford to match his “standard.” No to the internship that felt beneath his degree. No to the entry-level that didn’t carry the job title he had rehearsed in his bathroom mirror.
Fourteen months. And do you know what his CV looked like at the end of those fourteen months?
Exactly what it looked like on day one.
Nothing added. Not even one .
Nothing proven. Not a single piece of work he could point to and say, "I built that. I did that. That was me."
And when the opportunities eventually started knocking, they knocked with a question he couldn't answer: "Can you show us what you've done?"
He had nothing to show.
Now I'm going to say something, and I want you to really hear me on this. Not as some motivational speaker recycling quotes from a Twitter thread. But as a shameless businessman who has sat across the table from both sides of this conversation.
Bro to bro, please take any job until you find that dream job you desire.
I don't care how it sounds. I don't care what your coursemates will say on the group chat. I don't care that the salary feels like an insult to your ambition.
At the end of the day, no amount of pride and dignity can afford to buy you bread. No amount of "I'm waiting for the right opportunity" is going to explain to your landlord why rent is three months behind.
Just take that job offer. And do it well.
But here's where I need you to pay close attention, because this is where most people miss the real point entirely.
Taking the job is not the full lesson. The full lesson is what you do once you're inside.
I have seen people take jobs and treat them like a parking spot. They show up. They clock in. They do the bare minimum. They clock out. And then six months later, they're complaining that the role "wasn't challenging enough" or "didn't help them grow."
No. You didn't grow because you chose not to grow.
When I started building @techcloutafrica , we had young talents come through our doors with the fire of a thousand ambitions in their eyes. I tell every single one of them the same thing, whether they're on a paid role or volunteering their time:
No matter what you're working on, even if it's a volunteer role, give it your absolute best. Because if you leave that position and you can't point to it as a proud reference or a track record of your best work, you've probably wasted your time.

Most Nigerians in the Diaspora are too stingy, especially the self acclaimed entrepreneurs among them who are always motivating us on LinkedIn….😁😁
Infact you see those in the UK & Canada.
Are these guys that broke or what?
You guys need to come back home.
And the way they punch their calculator to calculate 50k deals in Naira with you, as if that 50k will suddenly make you a millionaire. Even the ones with less than a 200k per month budget want someone who went to Harvard Business School to be their staff…. May God have mercy on you guys, but save yourself and come back home mbok😅 unless there is no love at home.
