American-made HVAC air filters, MERV 8–16. Family owned company supporting American manufacturing. Got an HVAC question? Comment or email [email protected]
@alphaman_111 Air filter brand here, and #1 holds up. The 5 to 15% figure is from the Dept. of Energy. One add: don't jump to the densest filter you can find. A pleated MERV 8 to 11 changed on schedule fits most homes.
Clocks fall back Sunday. Easy way to remember the twice-a-year jobs: test the smoke and CO alarms, and swap the furnace filter. Same weekend, every year.
Daylight saving time ends this weekend. The clocks fall back Sunday at 1AM. Don't forget to change the smoke detector batteries. #daylightsavingtime#washingtondc
@Rip_520 Tip for getting the most years out of a tank: flush it once a year to clear the sediment, and have the anode rod checked every few years. That rod is what keeps the tank itself from rusting out.
@jewelruby13 Smart to get it done before the first real cold snap. Have a spare filter in the right size on hand when he comes. It's the first thing most techs check, and it's an easy one to keep stocked.
@adammarkowitzEA Congrats to Jovanna! First week tip for any new homeowner: find the main water shutoff and label the breaker panel before you ever need either one.
@p_r0909 No shame, it's that time 😄 If it smells like burning dust for the first hour, that's normal for the first run of the season. A fresh filter before the first real cold snap helps too.
@AwkwardEmpress Love when that works out. Once it's in, write the filter size and install date on the unit in marker, and make sure the warranty gets registered. A lot of manufacturers require that within 60 to 90 days of install.
@JesseTayRiver A 1725 house is a whole different animal. Leaving it under nitrogen overnight before pulling vacuum is the right way to do it, and plenty of installs skip that step. How are you getting the new duct runs through walls that old?
@FormerlyFormer Hang onto Philip. An independent tech who picks up the phone is worth more than any website. Tape his card inside the furnace door so it's there when you need it in January.
@Dubflip Fall is peak season for heating calls, so a morning window drifting into the afternoon is pretty normal right now. Quick tip while you wait: swap the furnace filter, it's the first thing they'll look at anyway.
Good list. On the filter line: 90 days is the upper limit for a basic 1" pleated filter, not a target. Pets, a dusty house, or a heater running all winter? Check it monthly. Hold it up to a light, and if you can't see through it, swap it.
Few homeowners tips:
- Change your filters every 90days
- Get your HVAC maintenance b4 Summer and Winter
- Understand how to use your dampers (HVAC)
- Get a deep cleaning every 60days
- Get your carpet cleaned once a year
- Get your house pressure washed twice a year
- Bug control spray every 60-90days
- Oil your door brackets once a year
- Clean your dishwasher every month
- Clean your dryer duct system once a year
- Clean garbage disposal once a year
- Drain hot water heater once a year

@MarshallsFolly Whatever number of trips you're guessing, add one 😂 Snap photos of the old parts and bring the broken piece with you. That usually knocks out at least one of those trips.
@Zendra3408 Air filter brand here. The tradeoff is real: a filter that catches more fine dust also adds some resistance. A pleated MERV 8 to 11 suits most home systems. The bigger problem is a loaded filter, so check it monthly and swap it when it looks gray.
@Adiofreak Nice upgrade. If the Nest was on a hallway wall near a supply vent or in direct sun, that alone throws readings off. The ecobee room sensors are the real win, since it can go off the rooms you're actually in.
@RathGames Don't run it. Call your gas utility; many will come out for a suspected venting problem and can red-tag the furnace, which puts it in writing for your landlord. Put CO alarms near the furnace and bedrooms meanwhile, and look up your state's rules on landlords providing heat.
@GrulkeLamonte 100%. And the ducts matter just as much. A right-sized heat pump on undersized or leaky ductwork still struggles. Ask for a Manual D along with the Manual J, and a static pressure reading at startup.
@DChronicleTales Wild story. Practical takeaway for anyone reading: label every breaker. It's a two person job, one flips breakers while the other walks the house calling out what went dark. One afternoon, and you'll be glad you did it the next time something trips.
@HVACAutomates Yep. Worth checking the equipment type in the thermostat's installer settings after any swap too. If it's set up as a gas furnace instead of a heat pump, it'll cycle all wrong no matter what else you tune.
MERV 16 is the top of the MERV scale, and it adds resistance your blower has to push through. Most homes don't need it. MERV 13 is the usual step up, only if your system is rated for it. Check the manual or ask your HVAC tech.
