This is Patrice Lumumba.

Born on this day 101 years ago, he became the first Prime Minister of the independent Congo and a fearless champion of African liberation.

His vision of a truly independent Congo threatened Belgian interests during the Cold War.

In 1961, he was overthrown by Joseph-Désiré Mobutu Seseko, arrested, and handed over to his enemies in Katanga.

He was executed by a Katangan Firing Squad on orders of Belgium.

The CIA had long plotted to remove him. They gave his assassination a green light.

After his execution, Belgian officers dug up his body, dismembered it, and dissolved it in acid in an attempt to erase all evidence of his existence.
