Just waiting for flight 261 to Belfast for the @thinkschoolcom conference tomorrow. Delighted to be invited to lead a workshop on 'Knowledge & Thinking in a Post Primary Context'. Can't wait to hear Professor Steve Higgins.
5 more diffuse thinking tasks perfect for form time... or even when a student hits cognitive overload.
Let your creative mind wander and have some thinking fun!

I used this stretch task today when I ran out of work
🤯➡️😁
Task:
For each of the questions identify which previous lesson gave you the base knowledge to answer it.
If it wasn't a lesson where did it come from?

I've just been writing some Diffuse Thinking activities for students to use in form times - I found it very enjoyable! Here are the first 5. More to follow...

This term I have been introduced to treasury tag books by @Julestheteacher
I can't believe I have never used them!
Save glue
Save your budget
Save lesson time
Save the books from being messy
🎉🎉🎉
Kick off a lesson requiring knowledge recall & some rich thinking. #geographyteacher example below but works for anything 🎉
Task: use list of key terms ➡️ sort list under 3 categories ➡️ decide the title of each category
#edutwitter#nqt#teachertwitter
I tried something different for my opener today.
Task:
Examine image ➡️
write 3 lists -
- sights
- sounds
- smells ➡️
what knowledge do you have that helped create the lists?
I used #geographyteacher image but concept works for many subjects.

Here is another die #KnowledgeRecall game
Task: all pupils write questions based on topic ➡️ choose 2 students ➡️ 1 rolls die ➡️imagine seating plan is the board➡️ student they land on asks question ➡️ repeat ➡️ winner gets to end 1st.

Here is a really easy to use 'stretch' task for when you open a lesson with knowledge recall questions.
If a student finishes with time to spare then tell them-
Task:
For each question write a list of answers that are not quite right.

Another dice game extension for you.
This one works where pupils have been learning a sequence i.e. stages of a process, events in a story, a recipe, a cycle, events in time...
Roll die to select one of the questions below 🎲😁

I love using a Q Matrix with all my year groups - here is one way to make it really competitive
Task:
Select Topic ➡️
Pick a number between 50 & 150 ➡️
Challenge students to create questions that add up to the target number.

Today I used a 'Knew New'! It was only when explaining the task that it dawned on me that it has a catchy name.
Task - watch clip/read text and write 2 lists
1. Things you already KNEW
2. Things that are NEW...
From now on all I need to say is 'Do a Knew New'

New year and PM observations coming up? Here is a slide I've adapted to help frame real thinking learning objectives - it's been my go to for years!
Good luck in observations

Do you have a giant die in the cupboard?
Try this: Choose student ➡️ roll die ➡️ they generate a question for class ➡️ class answer ➡️ repeat
1. What is...
2. Where did...
3. What can...
4. Who would...
5. Why will...
6. How might...

Expectations to complete register within 5 minutes of start of lesson and also a focused activity to engage students upon entry? 🤯
Why not do both? 😇
Try using this 'Register Recall' task inspired by @michelle_hills 👍
#teachershelpingteachers#edutwitter#NQT
I like having this slide ready for impromptu moments of evaluation... or planned ready for a conclusion.
Great to see students realising it is ok to have different answers ➡️ but must justify.
