It's very, very hard to focus right now. Modern tech is not your friend on this.
The best thing I've learned is to be realistic…accomplishing 2 hours of true "deep work" each day will actually compound very quickly.
One of the reasons I'm so bullish about what we're creating here at @ValueBase is so many uber-talented people believing in the mission enough to leave epic tech companies (like Google) to join us.
Most engineers would kill for a job at Google…
Unless, of course, they are obsessed with solving the tax assessment challenge for governments across America.
Just a reminder: the path isn't straight…but keep following your dream. Every step can be a step in the right direction if you choose to see it that way.
I've wanted to be a founder since I was 12 years old.
But out of college…was actually paid for my English writing background to do research on entrepreneurship.
Looking back, this education on all things building startups was actually invaluable. And is still serving me.
Whether we're talking about residential or commercial, the fundamentals matter in tax appraisal.
Without a strong framework, even the best AI models are going to fall short.
In other words…smart humans in our field aren't going anywhere!
As an SDR, you will be the first point of contact with potential customers, responsible for driving pipeline growth by identifying, qualifying, and creating sales opportunities. Fully remote opportunity at a mission driven start up.

Valuebase is hiring! We build property valuation models for state and local governments. We’re looking to bring on two or three engineers.
First, we’re looking for an experienced frontend dev who can be the product owner for the web visualizer that serves as the primary way our customers interact with our valuation models. Next.js + React. This person needs to be able to work with little oversight, needs to be a confident developer and also should be comfortable scoping out the roadmap for the web app.
Second, we’re looking for one or two experienced engineers to work on our valuation pipeline. The codebase is a Python-based data pipeline which cleans customer data and prepares it for ML modeling. We are looking for people who are going to be able to quickly ramp up and actually run customer modeling alongside improving the pipeline so we can scale with our growing customer base.
Seed-stage, eight employees, fully remote. DM us if the above sounds interesting.
My company is hiring for boring entry-level jobs
You ever read those online job postings that are like:
Come work for Zoopflxr, an exciting cutting-edge tech startup in the Bay Area! We're looking for cracked 10x engineers under the age of 26 that are passionate about disrupting the world of high frequency decentralized crypto augmented reality dog walking AI metaverse finance. The ideal candidate will have 10 years experience in <technology invented 5 years ago>. Zoopflxr will provide unlimited Zyn, Monster energy drink, and off-label prescription stimulants.
If that sounds like your dream job, you definitely shouldn't apply to Valuebase.
What is Valuebase?
Valuebase is the company I work for. We do boring work that has the side effect of Improving Society Somewhat™. This is an underrated field of work and if you are smart and get things done, then you should apply.
What does Valuebase do?
We work with civil servants in local governments assisting them with real estate mass appraisal, as well as GIS service (putting information on maps and then looking at the maps).
What are we looking for?
Here, let me give a whack at our own job posting:
Come work for Valuebase, an extremely boring tech startup in the middle of nowhere (all positions remote). We're looking for people who are smart, get things done and are interested in Improving Society Somewhat™ as a natural side effect of helping local governments value real estate at scale. The ideal candidate dreams of working with a bunch of middle aged middle Americans helping civil servants all day.
Right now, we are hiring exclusively for entry-level positions – i.e., interns. (If and when we are looking for more senior positions I will post that on this blog too)
These are paid positions geared towards people at the start of their careers. That means we do not expect you to have years of experience and a star-studded resume. It does mean, however, that we expect you to be smart and to get things done, and to be able to prove it. We expect you to be good at learning quickly and solving a certain amount of problems yourself, but we will also provide training.
There's two kinds of entry-level roles we need:
1. Technical
2. Non technical
Technical means you will be reading, writing, and editing a lot of python code. You will also be doing a lot of other programming, GIS, data cleaning, and data science tasks. Knowing python or GIS stuff already is a big plus. However, if you don't, you should still apply – we care way more about someone who's smart and get things done than someone who isn't but merely checks every specific item on the list.
Non technical means you will be doing everything else. This involves a lot of clerical and office work and general paper pushing. You will need strong communication, organization, and general problem-solving skills and should be comfortable using LLM's in order to perform various daily tasks. The key skillset here is being detail-oriented and on top of things and able to learn quickly.
If that sounds good to you, then send me an email at [email protected], I'll send you an application form, and be prepared to bore your friends and family to absolute death whenever they ask about your career plans.
I work for a boring company doing boring things that have the side effect of Improving Society Somewhat.
If that sounds like your jam please get in touch.
