One of my favorite bits of Revolutionary War history is that Washington never signed the Declaration of Independence because he was too busy in New York preparing for the coming British invasion, hence the phrase, “signed in ink in Philadelphia but signed in blood in Brooklyn.”

Overwhelmingly, Americans say that obeying the law, supporting the Constitution, believing in the Declaration of Independence, being a citizen, and voting in elections are what make you a real American.
Overwhelmingly, they say it's NOT about race, religion, or family heritage.
We dropped a nuclear bomb on Japan, twice, and 80 years later they light up their cities in our colors as a show of how much they love us.
Meanwhile, we bailed half of Europe out, twice, and their governments take every last opportunity to signal how much they despise us.
On July 2, 1776, delegates for the 13 American colonies voted to approve a resolution submitted by Richard Henry Lee announcing "That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown." With the vote complete, Congress began editing Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence, getting ready to announce the decision to the world.
