Aleister Crowley and the Practice of Mohammedan Magic? In 1909, Aleister Crowley and Victor Neuberg would perform a series of rituals in the Algerian Desert, many of which strangely match an Islamic Hadeeth. Aleister Crowley would even choose Qur’anic verses of Surat al-Ikhlas to repeat as a mantra: قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ (1) اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ (2) لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ (3) وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ (4) The main ritual would be to exhaust oneself in a harsh journey in the desert, and invoke Chronozon, Demon of Dispersion, while Victor Neuberg is protected in a Magic Circle. Their purpose was to further their immersion in the Aethyrs of Enochian Magical System, the 30 Levels or Realms discovered by John Dee and Edward Kelley. But in the case of the latter magicians, their sex rituals involved swapping wives, while in the case of Crowley and Neuberg, roles are reversed between them and Crowley is sodomized as a homosexual (so becomes the wife). But in many ways, Crowley’s experience is very much reminiscent of that of Prophet Mohammad and his companion Abdullah ibn Masud. Based on the narration from Musnad Ahmad (6/332–334), Ibn Masud says: “The Messenger of Allah sent me on an errand. We went forth until we reached a certain place. Then he drew for me a boundary (a line or an area on the ground) and said to me: ‘Stay within this area, between its sides, and do not go out of it. For if you go out of it, you will perish (or be destroyed).’” Here we see that Prophet Mohammad draws a magic circle (boundaries for his companion), otherwise he is perished. In Crowley’s ritual, Neuburg is also protected in a circle and told not to succumb to Choronzon. “So I stayed inside (the boundary that the Prophet had drawn for me). The Messenger of Allah then went on ahead, a short distance or a little farther. Then he encountered some beings, a group making a humming or buzzing sound, like the sound of the Zutt (an Indian tribe known in Arabia at the time), they had no clothes on, but I did not see their private parts; they were tall and thin, with little flesh on them…” Prophet Mohammad’s magic invocation brings forth a legion of Jinn called the Zutt, but also in other interpretations are depicted as Brown Indians. They are described as a naked tribe. “They came and began to ‘mount’ (or press upon) the Messenger of Allah, The Prophet of Allah began to recite to them (verses of the Qur’an). Meanwhile, they started coming around me, encircling me and cutting across in front of me. I (Ibn Masud) was struck with great fear of them, and I sat down.” Here the Jinns (or Zutt) start mounting and sodomizing the Prophet, while in Crowley’s version the roles are reversed and Neuburg sodomizes him (after Choronzon possesses Crowley), when he had been abusing and dominating him as his “spiritual guru” before the ritual. “When the pillar of dawn light split (i.e., when daybreak came), they began to go away. Then the Messenger of Allah came back heavy and weary, or almost as though he was sick because of what they had done to him. He put his head in my lap (or as he said it) and dozed off…” Hence, the ritual (homosexual orgy) commenced and the Prophet slept out of exhaustion, similar to exhaustion felt by Crowley, and which was necessary for the magic rituals. “After that, another group came, they had long white garments on, while the Messenger of Allah slept. Then the Messenger of Allah awoke and said: ‘What did you see, O son of Umm ʿAbd (Ibn Masud)?’ I said: ‘I saw such-and-such…’ (describing the beings). The Prophet replied: ‘Nothing of what they said was hidden from me. They were a company from among the angels, or he said: they are from the angels, as God willed.’” In Crowley’s version he destroys his Ego and reaches a new revelation that Choronzon is a Demon of Diversion since he is the Hyle of All Forms. In Mohammad’s, the ritual end-result is invoking the Angels after the Jinns.
