Men are running online rpe academies and platforms are doing almost nothing

Telegram groups and porn sites are hosting communities where men share tips on drugging and assaulting their sleeping partners, and the law is barely keeping up.

What CNN found:

A months long investigation uncovered private Telegram groups where men from around the world share advice on drugging their partners with sedatives, filming the assaults, and evading detection. One group called "Zzz" had nearly a thousand members exchanging dosage tips, substances, and videos. One man livestreamed the assault of his unconscious wife to paying viewers for $20 each, with cryptocurrency as the payment method.

The platforms enabling it:

Prn site https://t.co/Oom13F9twg hosts more than 20,000 videos of so-called "sleep content" tagged with terms like "passedout" and "eyecheck," with some videos surpassing 50,000 views. The site had approximately 62 million visits in February alone. US safe harbor laws largely shield platform owners from liability for user-uploaded content, making enforcement nearly impossible. The Telegram "Zzz" group was removed during CNN's investigation, but similar communities continue to operate.

The survivors:

Zoe Watts of Devon, England discovered her husband of 16 years had been crushing their son's sleeping medication into her nightly tea and rping her while she was unconscious. He is now serving an 11-year sentence for rpe, sexual assault, and drugging. Amanda Stanhope of Wigan, England woke repeatedly to find bruises on her body and was gaslit by her partner who told her she was imagining it. A survivor in northern Italy named Valentina discovered videos her husband of 20 years had filmed of her assaults after he drugged her with alcohol and sedatives. Her former husband received an eight-year sentence.

How perpetrators avoid detection:

Perpetrators are shifting away from classic date rape drugs like Rohypnol and GHB toward more readily available prescription sedatives like zolpidem, known in the US as Ambien, which exits the body within seven to eight hours and is harder to detect. The World Health Organization told CNN that reliable data on drug-facilitated sexual assault is "scarce by design" because of chronic underreporting driven by victim shame, memory loss, and inadequate police training. In England and Wales, 23% of recorded sexual assaults involved victims who were unconscious or asleep, up from 21% a decade ago.
