It was neither ambitious or original, relying on tired tropes and imagery from both the OT and a number of overrated anime. It is the most obvious example of the midwit curve for film that I know of. No quarter for those who think it is anything other than complete trash.
I unironically agree. The Last Jedi is a brilliant film.
To be fair, Holdo was poorly written and dragged down its overall quality a bit.
But it works as an earnest interrogation of mythology, and it temporarily broke Rey out of being a Mary Sue, allowing her to make catastrophic choices. It’s technically brilliant with striking red motifs and action choreography.
The Last Jedi is a flawed masterpiece. And we will never see a Star Wars movie this ambitious or original again.
