اکتوبر 1973 میں رمضان کے دن تھے، اسرائیل فلسطینیوں پر قہر ڈھارہا تھا، پاکستان کے وزیراعظم ذوالفقار علی بھٹو نے غیرمعمولی فیصلہ کیا اور پاک فضائیہ کے 16 تربیت یافتہ پائلٹوں کو اسرائیل سے جنگ کے لئے روانہ کردیا-

یہ مشن انتہائی خفیہ تھا، پائلٹوں کو بتادیا گیا تھا کہ اگر وہ شہید ہوگئے یا گرفتار ہوگئے تو پاکستانی حکومت ان کی ذمہ داری نہیں لے گی، وزیراعظم ذوالفقار علی بھٹو نے صدام حسین کو اعتماد میں لیا، حافظ الاسد کو بھی ذوالفقار علی بھٹو اپنا پورا منصوبہ سمجھاچکے تھے، پاکستانی پائلٹ پہلے خفیہ طریقے سے بغداد پہنچے، پھر انہیں انتہائی رازداری سے دمشق میں واقع دمیر نامی فوجی ہوائی اڈے منتقل کیا گیا، 16 میں سے آٹھ پاکستانی جانباز مصر روانہ ہوگئے۔

شام کی فضائی فوج نے ذوالفقار علی بھٹو کی جانب سے خفیہ مشن پر بھیجے گئے پاکستانی آرمی کے دستے کو 67 اے اسکواڈرن کی پہچان دی اور وزیراعظم پاکستان کے فیصلہ لینے کے ٹھیک 36ویں گھنٹے میں پاک فضائیہ کے پائلٹ پرانے روسی جہازوں مگ 21 ایف 13 کے کاک پٹ میں بیٹھے ہوئے تھے-

دمشق شہر کو اسرائیل کے جدید میراج تھری اور ایف فور پینتھم جہازوں نے بمباری کرکے تباہ کردیا تھا، کسی بھی غیرمتوقع صورت حال سے نمٹنے کے لئے 32 جہازوں پر مشتمل اسرائیلی ہوائی دستہ طبریا جھیل اور بحرِمردار کے چکر کاٹ رہا تھا، پاکستانی پائلٹوں کے جہاز پرانے اور خستہ تھے، فیول کی گنجائش بھی صرف 30 منٹ کے لئے تھی، انٹیلی جنس معلومات نہ ہونے کے برابر تھیں، بھارتیوں کو اس پیشرفت کا علم ہوگیا، بھارتی فوجی پاکستانی پائلٹوں کو گرانے کے لئے اسرائیلی فوج کے معاون بن گئے، صورت حال انتہائی کشیدہ ہوچکی تھی-
