Meet the Atuot (Reel) people of South Sudan. Mostly living in Yirol West County, Lakes State, this Nilotic community has a rich, fierce history of migration, pastoralism, and cultural survival. 300–500 years ago, the Atuot and Nuer lived as one group.
After internal disputes, the Atuot migrated south along the Payii (Yei) River. While they share deep roots with the Nuer, elders also trace ancient connections to the Luo people. Arriving in Yirol, they integrated with early blacksmiths and Dinka groups. Today, they speak Thok Reel (a distinct Western Nilotic language), but centuries of living alongside the Dinka heavily influenced their songs, proverbs, and cattle-keeping traditions.
They are known historically for fiercely resisting British colonial rule; the Atuot forced multiple administrative boundary changes. Today, they are a vital part of modern South Sudan, producing top military leaders, academic pioneers, and pilots.
