A Charlotte man had his hands around a woman’s neck. She was kicking and screaming. She struggled to breathe. It was caught on video. Despite all of this, Demont Forte was found not guilty of strangulation.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s office says North Carolina’s strangulation law is failing survivors.
@Hunt_Saenz did an eye opening report on this.
Strangulation is one of the most common and lethal methods of intimate partner abuse. It also can foreshadow potential future lethal violence.
The Meck DA’s office shared this photo from a video clip and points out common sense says this is strangling.
But North Carolina law requires proof that strangulation caused physical injury. And the DA’s office says in this case, the suspect also punched and kicked the victim. So the jury could not determine which injuries came from what. Demont was convicted of assault on a female. But not strangulation.
And then there is the penalty. Often times probation is the likely sentence.
There’s a bill in the General Assembly that would change this. Democratic State Senator Woodson Bradley of Charlotte wants to increase the penalties for strangulation.
The Mecklenburg County DA’s office also wants to lawmakers to get rid of the requirement of proof of physical injury by strangulation for conviction.

Most people have heard about how datacenter development is flooding into North Carolina. But did you know that we, North Carolina residents and taxpayers, are subsidizing them?
It's true: thanks to a law passed by our state legislature in 2015, datacenter developers and operators pay zero ($0) state sales tax on all equipment, electricity (!) and software they buy.
So even though datacenters rely on hard infrastructure paid for by North Carolina taxpayers - like roads, water/sewer, emergency/police/fire protection and much more - they contribute no sales tax in return. All of that additional tax burden is dumped on us.
That's a political choice.
New: Governor Josh Stein sent this letter to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem requesting answers to 12 questions about the CBP operation in Charlotte @wsoctv#Ncpol
Kamala Harris: And folks, what we are experiencing right now is exactly what they envision for America. Right now we are living in their vision for America. But this is not a vision that Americans want
Kamala Harris: So look, some people are describing what's been happening in recent months as absolute chaos. And of course I understand why. And it's certainly true of those tariffs. Tariffs that, as I predicted, are clearly inviting a recession.
Today, Governor Cooper and I have taken legal action to stop the legislature’s unconstitutional and dangerous power grab. This law threatens public safety, fractures the chain of command during a crisis, and thwarts the will of voters. Our people deserve better than a power-hungry legislature that puts political games ahead of public safety.
Holy sh*t. Linda Ronstadt has absolutely HAD it with Donald Trump & JD Vance & she is not holding back one bit. This statement is so good. Everyone must read & share this.
