If you have a relative sitting for their KCSE this year, please guide them carefully when it comes to choosing a career. School-based career guidance is a scam, the main goal is often to push students into any university or college course just so the school can boast a higher mean grade and brag to have “outperformed” other schools.

What they fail to realise is that this celebration and bragging only last two weeks. After that, the student is left alone to face reality, which usually hits hardest after higher education.

That’s why so many young people end up going back to college or university later, trying to study something completely different that will actually give them a life. The first course often turns out to be a total waste of time and money.

All this can be avoided by offering proper guidance now, instead of letting them waste years in misguided education programmes, chasing a “better future” that was never aligned with who they are or what they truly want.
