New Paper Alert. @Ella_Nicklin leads our new paper in @Dev_Bio_Journal Evolution, development, and regeneration of tooth-like epithelial appendages in sharks. What do all 'odontodes' have in common? Is a tooth, just a tooth? #sharks#teeth#skinteeth

Exciting morning in the lab - photographing the newly donated adult Bonnethead Shark (Sphyrna tiburo) before CT scanning. This is the smallest member of the hammerhead family (Sphyrnidae); one of only nine species of hammerhead shark. 🔨💀🦈 #hammertime#hammerhead#shark#REU
Did you know that some sharks have skin denticles INSIDE their mouths, not just on the external skin!? This is the embryonic Bonnethead #Shark lower jaw with 'skin-teeth' covering the surface of the heart-shaped tongue-like structure, the basi-hyal! 🔨🦈🦷
An Odontode Explosion! So wonderful to see such amazing first #SICB2024 talks by our undergraduate researchers Julia Bailey and Gianna Mitchell - they presented on the ontogeny of skin-teeth (odontodes) in catfish and sharks, respectively. @NSF#REU@UF@UF_CLAS@UFBiology 🦈🦷🎉
It's a wrap! Our Accessible #Shark Summer 2023 @NSF#REU program has come to an end. Gianna @gigimitchell28 was an incredible part of the team and we were lucky to have her working on diversity of shark denticles in several species! Here's a snapshot of her time in the lab!🦈🦷🎉
CT scan image of #shark skin denticle roots forming in circles around sensory ampullae pores. Image taken from the cephalofoil (nose) of the Bonnethead Shark (Sphyrna tiburo! By @Ella_Nicklin and @gigimitchell28#sharkweek2023 🦈

Check out this wonderful macro image of a cleared and stained baby catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) completely covered in skin teeth! Image by @Ella_Nicklin, our excellent @NSF REU student Gianna Mitchell and our visiting #brightfutures high school student Grey von Meding! 🦈🦷😲
Think you know #shark skin denticles? Here are mosaic tile-like denticles on the cephalofoil (head) tip of the Bonnethead Shark. These denticles seem to grow together to fill space; no obvious polarity or shape! Image by Gianna Mitchell, our amazing @NSF REU student! 🔨🦈🦷
