I was an unsaved Protestant who converted to Roman Catholicism in college because it fit my lifestyle. Drinking was acceptable and I could attend mass with no real sin conviction

William Tyndale's last letter to Governor of Vilvorde before he was martyred. I have this posted in my study room, he always reminds me of commitment to the end.

He asked permission to read his Hebrew Bible for study before the day he was martyred. Isn't that a great reminder? How much time do we give to our Bibles?

On this day in 1536, William Tyndale was executed for translating the Bible into English.
He was betrayed, arrested near Antwerp, and burned at the stake - his last words:

“Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.”

Tyndale’s life’s work was to give ordinary Englishmen and women access to the Word of God in their own tongue.
His translation formed the backbone of every English Bible to follow - including the King James Version, which retains much of his phrasing.

Within just a few years of his death, Henry VIII authorised the English Bible to be read openly in every parish.
Tyndale’s prayer was answered.

He stands as one of the great martyrs of English Christianity - a man who believed that the ploughboy in the field should know more of Scripture than any priest who sought to keep it locked away.
