While this premise may be widely accepted it is also floored. Simply because it is too absolute to be true: conquest may have shaped many states and borders, however not every country was formed that way, and not every Indigenous society “claimed” land through conquest in the same sense. A more accurate statement would be “human history in the formation of countries on planet earth includes conquest, settlement, treaty-making, migration, federation, decolonization, and coercion in different combinations. Reducing all land histories to conquest erases important differences and can be used to excuse real dispossession.
