These quick thoughts by Michael Jochum on the disturbing reason Trump gets as much support as he does is a must-read 👇
I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016, and then again in 2024, given how emotionally toxic and depraved he is.
I don’t wonder anymore. I think he won for that exact reason. Because he carried at least one broken shard to reflect the broken shards in millions of others.
If you’re a racist, you found your guy. If you’re a misogynist, you found your guy. If money is your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart is armored shut, you found your guy. If you mock the disabled, you found your guy. If intelligence makes you insecure, you found your guy. If you’re a sexual predator, you found your guy. If you trade in humiliation and conspiracy and filth, you found your guy.
If you’ve never done a single hour of emotional inventory, you found your guy. If you cheat, stiff contractors, bankrupt your obligations, and call it savvy, you found your guy. If you lie as easily as you breathe, you found your guy. If cruelty feels like strength, you found your guy. If white grievance is your comfort food, you found your guy. If your ego is a black hole no title can fill, you found your guy. If warmongering fuels your ego, you found your guy, If empathy feels like weakness and dominance feels like oxygen, you found your guy.
If he’d only carried one or two of these pathologies, he might have been dismissed as just another loud, damaged man. But he carried a buffet of them. That was the appeal. Millions could locate themselves somewhere in the wreckage. They didn’t have to agree with all of it. They just had to recognize a piece of themselves in it.
It was never really about him. It was about the validation. The absolution. The permission. He didn’t invent the resentment; he amplified it. He didn’t create the cruelty; he normalized it. He gave millions the intoxicating relief of hearing their ugliest impulses echoed back at rally volume.
Trump is a symptom. The deeper illness is collective. If there’s one sentence that defines his power, it’s this: “He says the things I’m thinking.”
And that’s the part that should chill us.
Because what does it say about us that so many were thinking those things? That tens of millions of Americans harbored resentments so deep, so seething, that they were simply waiting for a demagogue to baptize them as virtue? That after decades of supposed progress on race, gender, and equality, so many white men felt so threatened, so displaced, so furious, that cruelty became a political platform?
Maybe we were living in a fool’s paradise, mistaking silence for healing, politeness for progress.
Now the mask is off. Now we know.
And knowing is a far more dangerous place to stand.
– Michael Jochum, Not Just a Drummer: Reflections on Art, Politics, Dogs, and the Human Condition.
Trump will have:
* Torn up Obama’s deal
* Spent billions
* Depleted US critical supplies
* Cost tens of billions in US Gulf infrastructure damage
* Lost American lives
All to get:
* A worse deal than the one he tore up
And MAGA will screech and shout “TDS” if you question it.
Obama didn’t cause any division in this country. It was caused by all the bigots who couldn‘t handle a Black President. If you think it was Obama who caused the division, it’s because you’re one of those bigots.
They loved Marjorie Taylor Greene, now they hate her.
They loved Thomas Massie, now they hate him.
They loved Lauren Boebert, now they hate her.
They made fun of Biden for nodding off ("Sleepy Joe), now they ignore Trump outright falling asleep.
They put "I Did That" Biden stickers on high gas prices, now they ignore gas prices being even higher.
They bragged about Trump being the no wars President, now they support war.
They bashed Biden for sending money to Ukraine, now they ignore Trump sending money to both Ukraine and Israel.
They demanded the Epstein files, now they bash anyone asking for the Epstein files.
To be a MAGA is to be a slave.
Not physically, but mentally.
They stand for nothing.
We're up against people who stand for nothing.
And with the most misplaced confidence you've ever seen, they try to tell us whats-what.
We shouldn't even acknowledge these people.
The Trump supporters that remain are mentally too far gone.
I don't even want to argue with them anymore.
The overall story of the second Trump admin is the abuse of power to enrich his family, reward his friends, and forgive crimes committed on his behalf, while punishing critics, threatening civil society, taxing the rest of us, and piling debt on our children.
@JohnBishop71 Were season ticket holders given the opportunity to secure tickets ahead of time…”in the event of the Huskers hosting”…similar to the process used for volleyball postseason?
Cesar Sayoc, a Trump super fan & obsessive Fox viewer, sent pipe bombs in 2018 to Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, & many other top Dems.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
In the wake of the attacks, Trump said about his rhetoric: "Tone down, no. Could tone up."
Think we need to be honest about what we are seeing here. The Iranian government is still the same theocratic dictatorship and the Iranian people are in desperate straits after the US promised them liberation. The Iranians still control the Strait of Hormuz, still maintain their right to collect tolls, still have their nuclear program, and have Trump promising to return them $20 billion in frozen assets.
The markets also have concluded that this is the end, Trump has thrown in the towel.
A massive strategic failure by the USA.
The Governor vetoed a bill that passed 49-0, actually made it is so we would need to use property taxes LESS, and yet 26 people flipped their votes because apparently they serve the Governor, not the people. Absolutely wild.
We fought and lost a war in Iran so that both the Iranians and the Russians could make far more money from oil—the Iranians from tolls, the Russians from higher prices and the end of sanctions. That isn’t just strategic defeat; it’s self-destructive foolishness at a level unknown to military history.
