You might consider checking out GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). It's an open source imaging program that's available on all platforms, including Mac, Windows & Linux.

There is also a large online user base that's happy to help.

Now with additional Wisps script [GMIC] required.

Wisps output example 'The Ghost Train' (works best on cluttered images).
