Remember that stories teach us not that dragons exist (we already knew that), but that dragons can be defeated. Hope is audacious and necessary, especially in creating art and telling stories
It’s difficult to want to clock in, but then I remember I work for the woman who is making sure the words of James Baldwin are accessible to the entire world and that art is what gets us through
@mollyharperauth My children are obsessed with this sticker (saw it on a John Oliver episode) and they will be thrilled to see it in the wild like this!!!
Writers: Art is inherently political. No matter what happens today, your words matter, your story matters, your voice matters. Use it to make the world be a little bit more like the world you want to live in.
@mercedesmy I missed live music so much during the pandemic. We saw Green Day a couple weeks ago and I am not ashamed to have been weeping during their closing number. Live music is one of the best things we do as humans 🫶🏻
@amandarhill32 Someone got up in my comment section about how “the bar is so much lower for published authors” and how “they don’t even have to try” and that’s how we wind up with “so many shitty follow-ups” and SIR. No.
In the last 24 hours I’ve posted videos about:
- querying is hard
- being on sub is hard
- trying to get your second book deal is hard
Publishing is not for the faint of heart, y’all
Do you enjoy doing #NaNoWriMo but don’t want to use the website for … reasons?
Do you like their word count / goal tracker?
I have a spreadsheet for you.

Absolutely devastating news for the person who asked how they get started writing a novel if they don’t know how to write a novel…
Nobody knows. You just have to be brave enough to suck at something new.
How does one go about “raising the stakes” in a novel if
1) the novel is intended to be cozy or
2) the stakes are already “save the world”?
You answer the question of “why does THIS character have to do the thing?” #writingtips
Today it’s “you have been prequalified for $72,000 in debt consolidation” but I remember the good old days when it was “we are trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty”
If your character is doing the thing just because, that’s not a good enough reason. Your readers will feel indifferent and say that the stakes didn’t feel real, even if the stakes are sky-high. #writingtips
“Because if they don’t, the whole world will be destroyed!”
Cool, but everyone has a stake in that. Why does THIS farm boy have to be the one to do it?
Because he has heretofore unseen magic? Because he’s the only one who knows it’s happening? Maybe.
