@Mathgarden There’s this feeling that some folks see elem math as the facts kids learn to get to the good stuff. Understanding how operations work is the good stuff! Focusing only on memorization leads to things like needing an acronym to multiply binomials later on.
Love this! What a fun tool for composing shapes. Curious if folks are seeing these a lot in classrooms. Pretty expensive. Maybe similar less expensive alternatives out there?
Today we used magna-tiles to make new shapes with 2, 3, 4 and 5 triangles. There were lots of great discussions about the attributes of the different shapes we made and we even learned some new shape names. #thinkingclassroom#ParksideDreamTeam#1LISD

Division is always hard to teach. Here's an introductory lesson I did with 4th graders & I include suggestions for 3rd and 5th graders. https://t.co/0w0ld2UiqF
@mburnsmath I love this so much! I can’t stop thinking about the kiddo that said 56/13 would have a remainder and it doesn’t make sense. I might think about it all day. 😏These discussions are everything!

Name strengths that center student brilliance!
#1- avoid “I like…” b/c this is not about you
#2- ask yourself, what statements am I making & how are these pushing math thinking forward for students?
Powerful talk this morning from @ginapicha! #NCTMDC23@stenhousepub
