Every year since 2013 (except 2021 and 2022) the season started with a 2x champ looking to become a 3x champ and failing to do so. Let that sink in. What happened to Jesse Mendez this year has happened 12 of last 14 years with 16 missed opportunities! Since 2000, we have had more fail then succeed at this. Shocking ! Is this a Dan Gable curse? Mitchell Mesenbrink will look to become the NCAAs 50th 3x champ next season.

2026: 2xer Jesse Mendez (Ohio St) loses in the NCAA finals to true Freshman Sergio Vega (Okla St) 4-1 SV. Mendez ends career going 5-1-1-2

2025: 2xer Gable Steveson (Minn) loses in the NCAA finals to Wyatt Hendrickson (Okla St) 5-4. Gable ends career going 3-1-1-2

2025: 2xer Keegan O’Toole (Mizzou) loses in the NCAA finals to Dean Hamiti (Okla St) 4-1 SV. O’Toole ends career going 3-1-1-3-2

2024: 2xer Keegan O’Toole(Mizzou) loses to David Carr (Iowa St) 8-6 in the NCAA semis. O’Toole would have one year left in 2025.

2023: 2xer Roman Bravo Young (Penn St) loses in the NCAA finals to Vito Arujau (Cornell) 10-4. RBY ends career going 8-1–1-2

2020: 2xer Zahid Valencia (Ariz St) is 18-0 and ranked #1 as 2x defending champ. He got suspended before conferences ending career going 3-1-1

2020: 2xer Vincenzo Joseph (Penn St) is 15-1 as he loses to Marinelli (Iowa) 3-2 at Big Tens, but also had a 7-5 win over Marinelli in the dual. Covid cancels NCAAs. Joseph career ends going 1-1-2.

2019: 2xer Vincenzo Joseph (Penn St) loses to freshman Mekhi Lewis (Va tech) 7-1 in the NCAA finals. Joseph has one year left in 2020, so he thought.

2018: 2xer Dean Heil (Okla St) loses to True Freshman Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell) in the NCAA Quarterfinals 5-4. Heil would then lose to Freshman Chad Red (Neb) in blood round and DNP: Heil would end career going 4-1-1-R12

2018: 2xer Isaiah Martinez (Illinois) loses in the NCAA finals to Vincenzo Joseph (Penn St) 6-1. I-Mar was 3-0 vs Joseph outside of NCAAs where he was 0-2. I-Mar ends career going 1-1-2-2.

2017: 2xer Isaiah Martinez (Illinois) loses in the NCAA finals to freshman Vincenzo Joseph (Penn St) by fall 5:26. I-Mar would have one year left.

2017: 2xer Gabe Dean (Cornell) loses in the NCAA finals to Bo Nickal (Penn St) 4-3. Dean ends career going 3-1-1-2

2016: 2xer Nick Gwaizdowski (NC State) loses in NCAA finals to Kyle Snyder (Ohio St) 7-5 SV. Gwiz would end career going 8-1-1-2

2015: 2xer Jesse Delgado (Illinois) loses in Rd of 32 to David Terao (American) 4-2. Next match Delgado would inj out and DNP. Delgado ends career going 7-1-1-DNP.

2014: 2xer Anthony Nelson (Minn) loses in the NCAA finals to Nick Gwaizdowski (NC State) 4-2. Nelson ends career going 7-1-1-2.

2013: 2xer Matt McDonough (Iowa) loses in the NCAA quarterfinals to Freshman Nahshon Garrett (Cornell) 4-2 SV.
McDonough would then lose to Sprenkle (SDSU) 3-1 SV and DNP.
McDonough ended career going 1-2-1-DNP.

2004 Johnny Thompson (Okla St) loses in NCAA Quarterfinals to Josh Moore (Penn St) 8-7. He wrestled back for 3rd ending career going 2-1-1-3.
