PHIRSE KITAAB – A Nation That Reads, A Generation That Leads
Organised by GIO Goa | December 7 – 27, 2025
GIRLS ISLAMIC ORGANISATION (GIO) Goa announces the launch of
‘PHIRSE KITAAB’ (BOOKS AGAIN), a 20-day State-wide movement
dedicated to reviving one of humanity’s oldest and most powerful traditions - the
tradition of reading as the foundation of thought, wisdom, and collective progress.
The campaign will run from December 7 to 27, 2025, engaging communities
across Goa through learning, dialogue, and a renewed commitment to books.
THE ISSUES WE FACE TODAY
Modern society is advancing rapidly, yet losing something essential: the ability of
individuals to think deeply, to reflect independently, and to make decisions rooted
in understanding rather than imitation.
Today People react faster than ever, but contemplate less than ever, Opinions are
louder, but convictions are weaker, Knowledge is widespread, but depth is diminishing. The result is a generation surrounded by information but deprived of
introspection. This has given rise to society that risks drifting with trends instead
of choosing with clarity.
HOW HISTORY SPEAKS TO US
From the earliest civilisations to the great reform movements of the last century,
every significant leap in human progress began with reading. The pen and the
book have always been instruments of thought - shaping revolutions, sparking
ideas, nurturing leaders, and preserving the moral conversations of society. Books
taught communities to question, to imagine, to build, and to rebuild. They were the tools through which societies examined themselves and charted new futures.
Reading was never an elite ornament; it was the engine of social awakening.
THE DECLINE WE CANNOT IGNORE
In the last two decades, this foundation has weakened sharply:
Global studies show that the proportion of people who read for pleasure has fallen by nearly 40% in twenty years. Only 34.6% of children today say they enjoy
reading - the lowest figure recorded in modern surveys. Library access has
deteriorated: in States like Maharashtra, more than 33,500 villages remain without
a single public library. Increasingly, reading is being perceived as an activity for the privileged -widening the gap between those who have access to books and those who do not. A society that loses its reading culture slowly loses its ability to
think collectively, imagine boldly, and correct itself morally.
THE PURPOSE OF PHIRSE KITAAB
Phirse Kitaab is not a nostalgia project. It is an intervention - a necessary, timely
effort to restore depth in a generation overwhelmed by speed. Its aims to revive reading as a social force - a shared practice in homes, schools, and public spaces, to rebuild community access through libraries, book drives, and reading corners, to
nurture independent thinkers capable of reflection, dialogue, and responsible leadership, to make reading accessible for all, not an elite privilege, to cultivate a
culture where ideas are discussed, not merely consumed.
CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES
The 20-day initiative will include Public Inaugural Address, Reading Circles &
Public Read-Alouds, Meet-the-Author Sessions, School & College Read-Ins,
Bring Back Books” Literature Festival, Panels, workshops, and scholarly talks ,
Youth-led writing, research, and podcast projects, Book Collection & Distribution, Community Libraries and Home Reading Corners, Reading Classes in
neighbourhoods, religious places and public areas
