DRDO'S New Microwave Weapon

The DRDO High Power Microwave (HPM) Directed Energy Weapon system is an advanced counter‑drone technology under development in India. Mounted on a truck platform, it is designed to disable hostile drone swarms by emitting concentrated microwave pulses that disrupt or destroy onboard electronics. Instead of kinetic projectiles, the system achieves a “soft kill” by interfering with navigation sensors, communication links, and flight controllers, effectively neutralizing multiple aerial threats simultaneously.

Operating in the S‑band frequency range, the weapon uses high‑power microwave sources to generate rapid bursts of energy capable of damaging semiconductor circuitry. While exact figures on peak power output and operational range remain classified, DRDO has reported successful field trials demonstrating its ability to disable drones in real time.

The system is intended to provide a cost‑effective solution against saturation attacks, with advantages such as reduced collateral damage and no physical debris. It is powered by onboard energy supplies, giving it a deep magazine limited only by available power and cooling capacity. Target acquisition and tracking are supported by integrated radar systems, though details on phased array technology have not been publicly confirmed.
