I am usually full of gratitude🙏, for life, family, friends.
Today, it's a special day and I am kind of embarrassed to be in @PoetsAndQuants ranking🤗.
Sincerely thankful to my wonderful students & colleagues - faculty/admin - at @cassbusiness😘!

Maybe (or not) paradoxically, I find the strategy part the least problematic and working on workload spreadsheets quite relaxing. My mind actually takes pleasure in squaring complex circles. Yet, it despises futility and bikeshedding.

@bingle_colin@sheffielduni I wonder what the alternative'd be if no research active academic wanted to take any leadership role. More complaints about managers or "failed academics" filling the gap? 🤔
@erinhengel@arthur_spirling Even more problematic for academic senior managers. Pool of managerially competent candidates willing to take the hit on research and/or to forego alternative opportunities is rather small, and smaller the higher the rank. Bureaucratic dysfunctionality thrives in academic voids.
I valued SpaceX for its IPO a few weeks ago, with minimal information and a promise to revisit the valuation, when the prospectus was made public. The prospectus is public, the offering price has been set and my update is up and running. https://t.co/zRjpD1C0wv

UK tax has gone up significantly over the last 25 years
But the tax paid by the average UK worker has not
This apparent miracle was achieved by taxing “other people”: higher earners, capital, property, banks, etc
The strategy has run out of road
A 🧵 on what happens next.

Most football clubs are looking for someone to run them.
We’re looking for someone to help build one.
Wealdstone FC is recruiting a CEO.
With new investment, a Wembley appearance, plans for a new stadium and ambitions to reach the EFL, this is one of the most exciting leadership opportunities in English football.

@austeni FYI, the Parish of St Swithun Wells in Eastleigh is been organized this way (5 priests living together covering multiple communities around 15-20 miles) since 2018. I'd suppose there might be others in Britain already.
THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU met box office disaster this weekend, sinking 70%. Someone could write a great book on how STAR WARS, the most valuable IP the world has ever seen, came under DIsney's ownership and was basically destroyed in less than a decade. Almost as if on purpose.
I have been giving total AI freedom to my students since Dec 2022 - when I told them about ChatGPT.
Countless assignments later, I still have to be surprised. It's mostly me telling them to use it more effectively.
Note: I run mainly applied classes.
“AI is demoralizing.”
A Princeton Professor says he kept wondering this semester (while lecturing) if his students would be better off learning from Claude:
@danhind Not sure "run as businesses" is precise. They are not nor they should: tons of stuff in HE would not last a week in decent businesses, even in good times. They are more like "state-owned enterprises": unsurprisingly things are spiralling when resources become scarce fast.
@danhind Italy has elective system, hard to claim a better one. Crux is scarcity in academic management competence ie senior managers are often academics in most institutions. If the collegial+good ones don't step up, the malicious+dysfunctional ones will. Choices are hard anyway, though.
@HigherEd_UK Using AI is nonsensical but often biggest challenge is that one person might be reading 100+ names from bundles of courses, not necessarily your students only, provided 1-2 days before when lists are confirmed + many students do not bother providing phonetic respelling symbols.
@HigherEd_UK The analysis doesn't disentangle: 1) up to 2021, nothing changed, thus there is no real reason why data should reflect any substantial outflow up to then; 2) # EU academics went for effectively a better option than moving, which is dual citizenship; 3) a drop in EU applicants.
🙌🏻 An incredible 14,141 of you were with us as we returned to Wembley for the first time since 1985!
💥 The largest gathering of Wealdstone fans since 1966
