Michelangelo sculpted his famous Pietà between 1498 and 1499. He was 23 when he began the work and 24 when he completed it. The sculpture was commissioned by the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères de Lagraulas for his funeral monument and is now housed in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
