Spain wants to occupy Ceuta and Melilla.
Spains support of Palestine is theatrical.

Spain waited until Gaza was heavily devastated before recognising Palestine, and recognised Israel as far back as the 1980’s.

Morocco formally supported Palestinian representative institutions in the 1970s and has maintained diplomatic and institutional support for decades.

The Moroccan king chairs the committee, which works to preserve the Arab, Islamic, and Palestinian character of Jerusalem.

Morocco recognised Israel only after the Abraham accords, while maintaining a position for a two state solution, in exchange for recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara.

The argument for or against Palestine-Israel is only an emotional leverage used against Morocco’s diplomacy, and has no place in the status of Ceuta and Melilla.

Analysts on here are calling the Ceuta border disaster an Israeli operation to punish Spain for recognizing Palestine.

Israel does not command 50,000 unemployed young men in northern Morocco.

Morocco does.

And once you see what Morocco is doing with them, you don't need a conspiracy. This is one of the most successful coercion campaigns running anywhere in the world right now, and it operates in the open.

Ceuta is Spanish soil in Africa, the EU's land border with the continent. One foot inside and you are in Europe, with European rights. But the crowds gather on Moroccan soil, so Moroccan police decide who reaches the fence.

Patrols tight: nobody gets through. Patrols relaxed: thousands in days.

Morocco owns a tap on the side of Europe. Europe has committed over 1 billion euros to keep it closed and calls it migration management. It is a protection payment. And protection payments only flow while the threat feels real, so every few years the seller reminds the buyer.

2021 was the reminder before this one. Spain quietly sheltered the leader of Morocco's enemy in a Spanish hospital. Weeks later, Moroccan border guards stood aside on camera and 8,000 people walked into Ceuta in 2 days. Spain's defense minister called it blackmail on live TV.

Ten months later, Spain surrendered 47 years of neutrality on Western Sahara and endorsed Morocco's ownership plan.

The blackmail worked.

Completely.

Every government involved learned that it worked.

Western Sahara is what all of this is for. A territory the size of Britain, abandoned by Spain as a colony in 1975, held by Morocco since, contested by an independence movement that Algeria funds. It is the cause the Moroccan monarchy's legitimacy rests on, and the king is winning it: US recognition in 2020, France in 2024, a UN resolution in October 2025 calling Moroccan rule the most realistic outcome, an EU trade deal covering the territory's products the same month.

Fifty years of stalemate, now moving in one direction only, and every step followed pressure, payment, or both.

Spain is the last major holdout. Spain is also the softest target, because Morocco holds its border.

Algeria is what sets the clock. Algeria bankrolls Morocco's enemy and sells Spain a third of its gas. Its power peaked when Russian gas died, and it fades as Europe builds alternatives.

Morocco's power is geography, and geography does not fade. So Morocco is racing to bank permanent wins while its rival's advantage is still temporary.

Then in July, Spain crossed two lines in 3 days. Sanchez flew to Algiers on July 20 to buy 10% more gas from Morocco's enemy. On July 23, Spain's parliament advanced citizenship for 70,000 people born in Western Sahara, which would plant a permanent pro-independence bloc inside Spanish politics.

And a Spanish court had just made retaliation free. A July 8 ruling ended instant beach returns for swimmers. In 2021, Morocco had to visibly stand down its guards in front of cameras. Now it only had to patrol a little less. Deniable. Free.

A week later, 50,000 people were in the water.

What is Morocco buying with this?

Kill the citizenship bill. Punish the Algeria trip. Raise the price of Europe's next border check, the way Turkey got 6 billion euros after 2016. And move Spain toward the concessions it has stalled for years: customs posts at the enclaves, Western Sahara's airspace, and eventually the word it wants most, sovereignty.

The 36-hour reversal was part of the message. The tap turns both ways, on demand.

Europe's response sealed it.

It blamed Spain who had nothing to do with it.

France put checks on Spain's border. Italy moved to suspend free travel with Spain. 7 governments pressured Madrid. The Commission praised Morocco's cooperation.

The victim got punished by its own club, because admitting your border contractor opens the gate when he wants a raise means admitting who the border actually belongs to.

Morocco coerced Europe in broad daylight, got thanked for its cooperation, and is now waiting for the check.

This is the thing his opponents cannot accept because accepting it would implicate them.

He came from the same country that built the myth.

The same country that made "American greatness" into a theological proposition rather than a political claim.

The same country that taught its children they were exceptional by nature, chosen by history, owed deference by the world as a simple matter of cosmic order.

He did not invent that belief.

He inherited it. He mainlined it.

He stripped away the tasteful, diplomatic, NPR-voiced packaging that his predecessors used to deliver the same message: that American power is its own justification.

And he said it in the accent of the country club bathroom and the construction site and the cable news green room.

He said the quiet part loud.

And the people who hate him most are largely furious not that he is wrong, but that he is loud.

That he removed the aesthetic buffer between American power and American arrogance that made the rest of the world bearable to deal with.

He didn't break the mask.

He just stopped bothering to wear it.

And now everyone has to look at the face.
