B1G time week for the Spartans as Taylor Pangburn and Jasper Cane both pick of Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors, while Beckett Crooks was named Men's Freshman of the Week!!🟢⚪
Kipyegon won’t break 4.
4:07.6 to sub 4 is too big of a jump.
Here’s why:
Drafting/Pacing will help the most. But I don’t think it’ll give 8 seconds.
Why? Even when you take college men who haven’t been in paced races to the magic confines of BU or whatever race where they just dragged around and are sitting the entire time, it’s not 4:07 guys making the leap. It’s 4:01-4:03 guys. Just ask BUs meet director how many coaches scream there 407 guy is ready to go sub 4…and where they end up.
I know. I’ve seen the theoretical paper. But I just don’t see it.
Second, she just doesn’t have the speed gap to be comfortable at 59.9 400s that long. Sure, the shoes help. And bicarbonate will help. But presumably she’s got most of the benefits from that already.
Even the most endurance based sub 4 milers have 1:53ish 800m speed. That’s what the doped up womens 800 record is. Even Keely or Athing don’t have that speed. And at peak shape there’s no taking Kipyegon over those two in an 800.
If we assume Kipyegon is at best 1:55 low or maybe 1:54 high…she would have specific endurance that we just have never seen.
They need something more than drafting to get her there.
A new leap in spike tech. A new supplement. Or…drugs…
So my prediction? It depends on pacing. If she was dead even, I could see 4:03 high or 4:04 low. But if they are going at 59.9s, I expect her to fall off a bit more after 1k, so I’d say 4:05 mid.
Which would be phenomenal.
This feels a bit more forced of a marketing gimmick than Kipchoge. Where drafting over an entire marathon adds up a lot more. And we just had a massive breakthrough in shoe tech that has since changed the game.
Maybe I’m wrong. But I don’t see it.
And if I’m honest, I hope that the female who inevitably breaks 4, does it in a normal competition. That way there’s no debates, caveats, or what ifs…they just get immortalized like Bannister.
Mady Sissoko has donated every cent he has made from NIL to his home country of Mali and was the key in securing the Spartans trip to the Sweet 16. One of the most inspirational stories you will ever find
John Hao is an international student from China who was a victim of the shooting at MSU on Monday night. His injuries include being paralyzed from the chest down and as he recovers the financial burden will be substantial. Please donate if you can

Fading the current strong jobs report is an emotional reaction only. You can't possibly be mad at the state of the labor market until we see the next inflation data.
The next CPI reading is going to really set the tone for 2023.

Mileage is arbitrary.
1. Run whatever makes you fast and doesn't get you hurt.
2. Don't take coaching advice from strangers on the internet.
3. I know I am also a stranger on the internet.
