— What made you want to become an idol, and who are your role models?
🌴: Both of my parents work in music, so I’ve kind of wanted to become a singer since I was little. But I think that feeling became stronger when I saw Girls’ Generation sbn performing “The Boys” on TV. I remember thinking, “I want to sing and dance like that too!” So I decided to audition and eventually joined the company.
I actually have two role models. One is Taeyeon sbn from Girls’ Generation, who’s also my senior at the company. And the other is Ariana Grande. She’s amazing at singing and acting, and she can even do musicals. I’d really love to see her live someday.
— Among the eight members, what do you think you’re best at?
🌴: Probably smiling! People even tell me, “Do you ever stop smiling? You’re smiling 24 hours a day!” laughs
— Your Japanese debut single, “ICONIC HEART,” was released on August 12. How did you feel when you found out you were making your Japanese debut?
🌴: I was really happy! It’s such a beautiful song, right? But I wasn’t very used to Japanese pronunciation, so recording it was actually pretty challenging for me. I got a lot of detailed guidance, especially with my pronunciation, so I learned a lot about how to sing naturally in Japanese. In the end, I think I was able to do a good job.
— The “magical girl” concept in the “ICONIC HEART” music video has gotten a lot of attention from female fans in Japan. What’s your favorite part of the concept?
🌴: When I first heard “magical girl,” I imagined the outfits would look completely different. So when I actually saw the costumes, I was like, “Wow, they’re so cute!” laughs I really, really think they suit Hearts2Hearts so well.
🌴: And the hairstyles are really detailed too, right? I wore a wig for the MV this time. I really love it! What do you guys think? I hope the fans liked it too.
— Around the time of your Japanese debut, you stayed in Japan and took part in various promotional activities.
🌴: I really, really love Japanese food and convenience-store desserts. Whenever I go to a convenience store, I always end up buying Ice no Mi, Mochipuyo, and chicken.
