BREAKING: The Supreme Court of Ohio rejected Ohio's request to enforce a ban on gender affirming care for trans youth.
This is a victory for trans youth and their families.
I'm not gonna argue with Cardi B on her not voting, but her comments motivated me to give a Civics 099 lesson (shout out to @1ericasavage). In under 10 minutes, break down how the co-equal judicial (i.e. SCOTUS), legislative (Congress), and executive (White House) branches of government impact how we solve (or don't) our country's problems. I also tackle how over 10 TRILLION of government expenditures are spent at the federal, state, and local levels. The bottom line is what I always say...if you're gonna be mad, know who to be mad at. If you wanna solve ish...know who the decision makers are. Also, not voting doesn't punish politicians... it rewards them with having one less person standing in the way of their election. #ReecieColbertShow
Keeping an open mind is not about lacking moral conviction. It’s about maintaining intellectual humility.
The people who leave their echo chambers are the ones who know their knowledge is incomplete.
A key to lifelong learning is engaging with others who disagree with you.
If you haven’t seen the Harrison Butker graduation speech, please go watch it.
Here’s a quote:
“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment.
You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives.
I want to speak directly to you briefly, because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.
How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world,
but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.
I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”
👀
This is the programming of so many people.
People believe women are here to support men. That our job is to create babies, not companies and jobs.
Not be equals.
I love being a partner.
I love being a mom.
But I also love my career and the fulfillment I get from my work.
If you’ve ever wondered what the patriarchy is, it’s this. This programming and thinking.
It causes subconscious hate and disgust for women who don’t follow these societal rules and expectations of what a woman “should” do and be.
I’m sorry to every graduate who had to sit there and listen to that.
Go on to change the world - however you choose.
I found a woman who worked for 10+ years as an “end-of-life” nurse.
She asked 100s of patients the biggest regrets they had on their deathbed.
Oddly enough…they all had similar answers.
Here were the top 5 most common:
(So you don’t make the same mistakes)
Insecure people always need to be heard. They aim to prove their knowledge and feel important. They seek status by getting attention.
Secure people are happy to listen. They want to improve their knowledge and make others feel important. They earn respect by giving attention.
I don't know how to raise my daughter in a country where the Supreme Court is debating how many organs are ok for women to lose before providing healthcare
Today is NOT a “sad day for America.”
Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that.
Today is a GLORIOUS day for America, a day when we can live out the ideal that is carved into the front of the Supreme Court
EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW
