The Coroner’s Inquest into the Death of Heather Winterstein has found that anti-Indigenous bias and bias against people who use substances contributed to Heather’s death as she desperately sought emergency care twice. She died of sepsis (a potentially treatable condition) after collapsing in the ER waiting room.
She was ignored to death.

“‘Nothing can bring Heather back,’ said her mother, Francine Shimizu-Orgar, in a statement. ‘But the truth has come out about the biased and unfair treatment she received because she was Indigenous and had a history of substance use disorder. Heather went to the hospital for help and was turned away. The system must change — for people like Heather and for Indigenous people across Canada. That will be Heather’s legacy.’”
The jury made 68 critical recommendations to health, educational and governmental sectors to address anti-Indigenous bias, bias against people who use substances, and to improve the safety and quality of healthcare.
My thoughts are with Heather’s family, those who love her, and all affected by her death.
May we all honour Heather Winterstein. All of us in the health sectors have a duty to implement the recommendations.
A jury has determined that 24-year-old Heather Winterstein died by non-natural causes, finding her “manner of death to be accidental.”
