Just the worst instinct of the Labour soft-left on this. It's "controls on immigration" mugs in response to genocide and escalating settler violence.

Targeting ALL Israeli businesses is the bloody point and the only way to force any change. Some half-baked settlement bans and "targeted sanctions" on settlers who couldn't give a damn is worse than doing nothing. It shows Israel the we can see their horrors and their genocide and we're not willing to do anything meaningful about it. It's genuinely galling this is being briefed as a "beefing up" of sanctions when it's political and economic impact is either marginal or counterproductive.

A four year old boy was just killed in a bombing hours ago in Gaza and the government is pussy-footing about how to minutely focus sanctions on the smallest target so "legitimate" businesses like Elbit and Rafael can carry on as usual. Stupid and maddening.

BTW, Apartheid didn't end because the world only sanctioned goods produced by white-owned factories in bantustans. It ended because the world said that the apartheid state, their officials and statesmen (and it was all men), citizens, sportspeople, academics and companies would be excluded from world affairs until apartheid ended. People forget the scope and scale of sanctions on apartheid South Africa, including the impact of disinvestment campaigns and cultural boycotts. It was a truly global movement that sought to totally isolate Pretoria (often against the wishes of the likes of Thatcher and Reagan).

Ultimately when South African businesses realised that their profitability would suffer or collapse altogether, this broke the political coalition that saw benefit in maintaining the system.

What about Trump charging Wall Street traders 100 grand a month for faster access to the president's posts on his Truth Social platform, allowing them to profit directly from state-sanctioned insider trading?

How that would work, of course, is three or four hours before he does something, he just does a post to all his Wall Street insider traders saying something like, "In about four hours, I am going to fuck with Mark Carney. So go make some money!"

What about Trump admitting that his sons benefit from insider trading and then managing to get himself and his sons immunity from the tax authorities, or him trying to get US taxpayers to pay for a $1.8 billion slush fund for January the 6th insurrectionists? An administration who is happy to pardon violent January the 6th insurrectionists, but dare to protest ICE agents, the White House will happily contain you getting shot in the face.

A convicted felon, an adjudicated rapist who took a bulldozer to the White House and is building a bunker under it in which he can lock himself when he loses the next election.

The man who makes up wars that didn't happen so he can say he solved them, who recently invented a new way of doing percentages, surrounding himself with people too afraid to point out to him that if egg prices drop by 600 percent, it means the chicken is paying you to steal its eggs.

A man who gives white South Africans asylum in America because of a white genocide that isn't happening, who believes diet Coke cures cancer, the man who makes monuments in his own name, who names airports and art centers after himself, whose political movement is happy to promote the narrative that the UK has fallen to religious extremists, which amounts to a coordinated propaganda effort against Britain, an attack on our sovereignty by supposedly our closest ally.”

I cannot stop thinking about Jack Lees choosing to swim back into the rip for the third student.

On 4 June 2024, at Northcott Mouth in Cornwall, three young women were caught in a powerful rip current. Jack and his friend Zaid Anfoka helped two out of the rip. Jack then went back for the third.

He stayed with her for about 40 minutes until she escaped the current. All three women made it back. Jack, 20, did not.

I feel heartbroken by what his courage cost him. I think Britain should know his name (I wish more people did).
