The Spurs just addressed one of their biggest weaknesses.
With the 26th overall selection, San Antonio goes with UConn big man Tarris Reed Jr., a rugged 6-foot-10, 260-pound center known for his rebounding, defense, and willingness to handle the gritty work.
The fit is obvious: Reed gives the Spurs another physical presence up front, helps absorb some of the wear and tear on Wemby, and brings the toughness fans were begging for during the Finals.

Hold on! Brian Wright wasn’t done.
According to Shams Charania, the Spurs acquired the No. 26 pick from Denver for the No. 35 pick and two future second-rounders, then used it on UConn center Tarris Reed Jr.
At 6-foot-10 and 260 pounds, Reed brings exactly what Spurs fans have been asking for: size, rebounding, physicality, and interior defense.
After selecting Jayden Quaintance at No. 20, San Antonio doubles down on frontcourt depth around Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs clearly heard the concerns about getting bigger.

Brian Wright takes a MASSIVE swing at No. 20. The San Antonio Spurs select Kentucky center Jayden Quaintance.
A year ago, he was a locked-in top-10 lottery talent. Severe knee setbacks limited him to just 4 games at UK and kept him out of the Green Room tonight, but the raw upside is astronomical.
At 6’9” with a 7’5” wingspan, he projects as the ultimate vertical-spacing 5-man. If the Spurs' world-class medical staff can get him back to full strength, pairing his elite rim-protection and lob-catching next to Victor Wembanyama gives San Antonio a completely terrifying defensive shell for the next decade.
Huge gamble, but the ceiling is undeniable.
June 23, 2005: The Spurs defeat the Pistons, 81-74, in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to win their third NBA championship in seven seasons.
Finals MVP Tim Duncan finished with 25 PTS/11 REB/2 BLK and Manu Ginóbili added 23 PTS for San Antonio. Richard Hamilton led Detroit with 15 PTS.
Here's the (long-winded) state of the #Spurs:
- If you're just now tuning in for the draft tonight, the Spurs have picks No. 20 (via ATL), No. 35 (from UTA via MIN) and No. 44 (from MIA via IND).
- San Antonio has eight players with guaranteed contracts next season (including Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, whose team options it has already opted into) and eight players set to hit free agency. That period officially opens on June 30. Free agent contracts cannot be officially signed until July 6.
- As it stands, Spurs are operating with a 2026-27 payroll of $152,768,566, ~$13 million below the projected salary cap of $165 million.
· UFA: Harrison Barnes, Kelly Olynyk, Lindy Waters III, Mason Plumlee, Bismack Biyombo, Jordan McLaughlin
· RFA: Harrison Ingram (two-way eligible), David Jones Garcia (two-way eligible)
- Julian Champagnie is the only player currently with a team option. He'll likely sign a bigger deal in San Antonio this summer, should the Spurs decline and renegotiate. They have until June 29 to decide. #PorVida
