CASE UPDATE from @FBIHouston: Sugar Land man sentenced for role in conspiracy involving smuggling firearms to Iraq
Hassan Al Gharawi, 54, will serve 63 months in federal prison following his conviction for conspiracy to violate gun export laws. From 2020 to 2021, Gharawi conspired with others to knowingly stockpile, conceal, and transport firearms in vehicle parts bound for Iraq. The defense argued Gharawi acted under duress from traffickers in Iraq, but the jury rejected those claims after seeing the extent of his involvement.

Great to be in Phoenix today addressing the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies (ASCIA) Spring Conference – ASCIA is one of the @FBI’s most important allies in this FBI’s working relationship with local law enforcement on investigations all over the country.
They work to collaborate and share information on strategic initiatives, policies, Fusion Centers, electronic and digital evidence collection, FBI trainings like our NCUTC program, preparation for the FIFA World Cup, and more - all allowing us to better work together.

Today’s story behind the numbers: This #FBI and the lifetime lockup of the leader of a violent gang that trafficked in drugs and murder.
John Pena and the Gorilla Stone Mafia—a faction of the national Bloods gang—were vicious drug dealers selling heroin, crack cocaine, and other narcotics on the streets of New York. They violently protected their turf with bloodshed, threats, and intimidation.
Pena was recently convicted at trial and received a mandatory life sentence late last month. The investigation was led by the FBI’s Metropolitan Safe Streets Task Force in New York, a force multiplier for protecting the community and taking dangerous thugs off the streets.
The FBI continues our record-breaking nationwide crackdown on gang violence, disrupting 2,450 violent gangs and criminal enterprises since last year—up 322%.

Today, the FBI is announcing Operation Riptide, an ongoing, coordinated law enforcement campaign targeting cybercriminal actors and the key services they rely on—their infrastructure, their tools and services, their communications platforms, and their money. Operation Riptide is a collective effort that implements the priorities set out in Executive Order 14390 and the National Cyber Strategy.
In recent weeks, the FBI carried out a broad range of enforcement actions against cyber threat actors, serving search warrants, securing indictments, arresting suspects, and dismantling criminal infrastructure.
This marks the beginning of a focused, sustained 60-day national effort. Cybercrime carries real-world consequences, and the FBI remains committed to disrupting malicious cyber activity and holding cybercriminals accountable.
The FBI is a key player in ensuring major sporting events hosted in the U.S. are safe and secure for all involved.
The Kentucky Derby is often called the fastest two minutes in sports. While the race is a brief moment in time, the #FBI and our partners begin planning and preparing months in advance. Each year, @FBILouisville and our partners @HSI_Nashville, @FAANews, @kystatepolice, and @LMPD, devote personnel, hours, and resources to ensure a safe and fun experience for the 300,000+ spectators who visit Churchill Downs over Kentucky Derby weekend.
•This year, our Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) Teams detected 6 drones. Three of those drones were seized for violating a Temporary Flight Restriction that was administered for this special event. Three UAS pilots were ticketed.
•FBI Special Agent Bomb Technicians (SABTs) responded to, assessed, and cleared multiple suspicious/unattended package calls.
•FBI Louisville SWAT and Evidence Response Teams were on standby before, during, and after the event to address any potential incident.
•Dozens more special agents and intelligence personnel contributed time and expertise to ensure a successful event weekend for both Kentuckians and thousands of visitors from around the world.
The FBI continues to move full throttle with our interagency partners making major US hosted sporting events like F1, the Club World Cup, the Super Bowl, the approaching 2026 FIFA World Cup, and upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics safe and secure for athletes and viewers.

In Denver today meeting with some of our regional partners from the Colorado and Wyoming area – represented by 25 different federal, state, and local agencies. Giving law enforcement across the country a bigger voice in D.C. continues to be a tier 1 mission for this @FBI.
We discussed a host of important issues including our Homeland Security Task Force model crushing violent crime, following the money fueling violence in local communities, protecting kids online from Nihilistic Violent Extremism, our work using AI to triage tips, counter UAS mitigation and drone detection, and more.
These are the men and women helping this FBI deliver the most prolific run of crime reduction in American history – including an over 13% decrease in violent crime right here in Colorado last year.
On the ground in Phoenix with our @FBIPhoenix team – a group doing incredible work to crush violent crime, protect our kids, and support our tribal partners in the region.
Recently this team was involved in securing an indictment against an Indian Country police officer - who allegedly sexually abused three victims while working as an on-duty officer on dates from 2020 through 2023. The subject has now been indicted with Aggravated Sexual Abuse, Kidnapping, and other federal charges.
They’ve also done tremendous work protecting kids online – late last year, they secured a 29-count superseding indictment against an alleged ringleader of the violent 764 network, part of the dangerous Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE) network this FBI has been cracking down on online (500% more arrests last year). The subject is now charged with producing child pornography, distributing child pornography, and even conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.
Thanks to the team for hosting and being apart of our field push to make America safer than ever before.
The #FBI honors Supervisory Special Agent Brian Lawrence Crews, who died on June 10, 2018, from a 9/11-related illness connected to his Evidence Response Team work at the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island, New York, after the attacks. https://t.co/k6Giz7JYtl
Today’s story behind the numbers: This #FBI and justice for the California doctor who stiffed taxpayers for $45 million in one of the largest fraud schemes ever uncovered in the U.S.
Violetta Mailyan—owner of a beauty and cosmetic clinic in an L.A. suburb—spent years faking and fudging records for Botox injections that were never provided or not medically needed—fraudulently billing Medicare for shots when her clinic was closed, when she was out of town, and before some patients had contacted her, even once charging a patient in prison.
The fraudulent gains were spent on lavish vacations, multiple luxury vehicles, and more than $14 million in properties and equities.
Mailyan was arrested last October and convicted at trial last month. Supported by @FBILosAngeles, this case is yet another victory in the nationwide crackdown on fraud led by the White House that has delivered billions of dollars in recoveries and savings for the country.
