I have a solution to the NBA tanking problem: average in teams’ records over the past three years, not just the last one. Some formula like weighing the most recent year at 60%, the year before that at 30%, and the year before that at 10% should work. And get rid of the lottery!
Charles Spurgeon: "Free will I have often heard of, but I have never seen it. I have always met with will, and plenty of it, but it has either been led captive by sin or held in the blessed bonds of grace."
Spurgeon: You cannot preach conviction of sin unless you have suffered it. You cannot preach faith until you have exercised it. True preaching is artesian; it wells up from the great depths of the soul. If Christ has not made a well within us, there will be no outflow from us.
The ancients stared at the stars most nights. We stare at screens most nights.
Stars make the world feel huge. They remind us we are tiny.
Screens often make the world feel small. They make us feel connected to everything.
I wonder how much this contributes to our anxiety.
A sign of the times: This is the first Final Four without a single former McDonald's All-American since the NCAA tournament began seeding teams in 1979. (Via @ESPNStatsInfo)
The church father Gregory Nazianzen once said of his friend Basil that “his speech was like thunder because his life was like lightning” (Pia Desideria, 104).
