Watch | CMDA in the last two years exhausted about Rs 4500 crores, including Rs 3000 crore of its corpus savings through interest from 1972. Officials in a recent review meeting found that the department deviated from its original mandate and ventured into full-fledged construction in the last two years. The TVK govt has now done away with CMDA ministry and the planning agency goes back to Housing Dept. It will focus anymore only on basic works such as urban planning, scrutiny of approvals and creating layouts.

The CMDA’s account balance is now in Rs 1500 in negative. The CMDA ventured into full fledged construction activity when it didn’t have the engineers or wherewithal to monitor them in pre or post construction period.

CMDA was instrumental in creating neighbourhoods like Anna Nagar, Koyambedu and Virugambakkam and yet, in the last five years, officials found no plotted development works were underyaken which is the primary job of CMDA.

Henceforth, the dept will move away from construction activity and focus on basics.
