@_ashleymoles_@davenpab Impacting just one student is progress. Teachers have the ability to effect students in various ways, which is why it is so important for teachers to have the right mindset
@KaylaCa27870035 I think that school curriculum would benefit from including lessons of social justice and political structure. I do think all school curriculum should, but I don't think these lessons should consume the curriculum
"Teacher activism can be defined as educators who work for social justice both inside and outside of their classrooms". What are some examples of how you, as a teacher, have worked for social justice inside or outside the classroom? #UCinnTeachDemocSoc
@davenpab There are certain teaching moments are more important & beneficial to the students than the expected curriculum. I'm not sure of a solution on how to work around seizing the moment through teaching, but I do feel like there are teachable moments that need to be taught right away
@ScanlanMattea We cannot shift from a culturally relevant to a culturally sustaining because the curriculum does not permit it. I think that educators reflecting on how they approach curriculum and altering their ways could be a first step!
@Qu33nAkilahD This was the same quote I used! I agree that culturally sustaining pedagogies is a better approach to improve the connection to current contexts.
"As we consider the need for culturally sustaining pedagogies, we must once again ask ourselves that age-old question: What is the purpose of schooling in a pluralistic society?" #UCinnTeachDemocSoc
@davenpab I agree with educators needing to acknowledge and inform their students, in the correct way, that they don't know everything. Approaching students by support and encouragement is key, and this is the type of relationship a teacher and student should have
"Diversity is what makes it interesting to study living things. By talking about gender diversity in our classrooms, we can engage minds, de-pathologize difference, cultivate empathy, and support academic rigor for all" How could we implement in classrooms?
@EmilyMorganNTYS I believe that using the students' personal stories helps to nurture hope. Every student has a different story, a different background, and a different outlook on not only education, but on life.
@KaylaCa27870035 I also think that science electives helps inspire students to learn different things that the "basic" science. I remember in high school I took a science elective course, anatomy. It was really interesting and I was grateful to have the chance to take this class
@davenpab I would say listening to the students is the best way for them to express their own voice when it is not always allowed. I think that listening to students and knowing what their outlook on certain things helps the student feel more comfortable and worthy
"The core mathematical ideas are necessary and appropriate for all students. Schools cannot use the differences in students' talents, test scores, prior opportunities, or interests as excuses for some students not learning math" #UCinnTeachDemocSoc
@KaityMccawley I think that the opportunity gap for all students in America to receive the education deserved is extremely important. I think that having high expectations for all students is a critical step that could hopefully lead to a decrease in the opportunity gap
@davenpab @csleeter I truly believe that until everyone understands what privilege is, and acknowledge whether or not they have this privilege, is the first step that needs to be taken
Why is it when compared to other nations, the US has a large achievement gap?
"The US is standing still while more focused and steadfast nations move more rapidly ahead" (Darling-Hammond, p. 25) #UCinnTeachDemocSoc
