Sunlight transformed the narcissus petals from lemon to butter, but that swaggering show-off would spoil her spell. Now belladonna, with her drooped head whispering to the moles, she would do. Circe plucked the flower and returned to her guest.

The girl's flushed cheeks and trembling hope made her cross. This child asked for a love potion while her own heart waited—frozen but not patient. No spell could return all she'd lost.
