I’m happier with this one now. A shame about the hundreds of blades of grass I drew in but it didn’t work. Not finished yet but at least the colours look better now.
And finally, in the series old drawings revisited 🤭 I changed the background of this one. Darker and greener, replacing the yellow green. Jaguar, coloured pencils on suede board, PanPastel background.
The secret to realism in Arts isn’t in spending years drawing pores or complex skin details. 🙅🏻♂️
It’s your ability to understand and perfectly depict the following:
1. Lights, highlights and shadows.
2. Tones and values
3. Contrast

Four (4) Tools For Blending Charcoal
1. Soft brushes
2. Blending Stumps
3. Tissue Paper
4. Fingers (You didn’t see this coming, right? 🫵🏼🫠)
Which of these tools do you make use of? 🤔

Shouldn’t be too much longer now. All feathers in place, finally.

If you don't have a portfolio yet to prove you can handle a client's work, do what I did in 2024 that landed me my first 500k+ client.
Go to LinkedIn.
Search for your niche role.
For example:
"Content marketing strategist roles"
"Data analyst roles"
"Brand strategist roles"
"Brand designer roles"
"Virtual assistant roles"
"Video editor roles"
Those job roles will pop up.
Read the description and responsibilities attached carefully.
Then prepare 3-4 samples based on the responsibilities listed.
Let me show you what I mean.
Say you're a Content Marketing Strategist and you find a job description that says:
- "Develop content strategies for Tiktok reels and Instagram reels"
- "Write engaging captions and copy for LinkedIn and threads"
- "Create email sequences that nurture leads"
- "Build content calendars aligned with business goals"
Don't wait for a client to give you that brief.
Give it to yourself.
Pick a real brand you admire.
A startup.
A SaaS company.
A skincare brand.
Anything.
Then:
Build a content strategy for them as if they hired you.
Create a storytelling script for the b-roll content.
Write 5 captions & CTAs meant to convert in their brand voice.
Write a 3 part-email sequence for their product.
Build a ready to use 30-day content calendar tailored to their audience.
Package it cleanly in a Google Doc or Notion page.
That's your portfolio.
That's the work you send when a client asks: "Can I see samples?"
This is exactly what I did in 2024: 👇🏼
BEST WAYS TO BLEND COLOURED PENCILS
1. Ensure your shading lines are consistent and very close to each other
2. With a sharp pencil, use circular motions while applying light pressure
3. Apply maximum pressure only when are satisfied with the colour combinations
