PSNI says clearing Garvaghy Road by force would have been "disproportionate". Around 1,000 people, kids and older people among them, held the road. Residents want an international mediator. They're not going back.

United just nicked one off Liverpool. Isaac Konde, 16, a winger who walked out of their academy, is officially a Red. One coach compares him to Nani. Liverpool want about £1m in compensation. Welcome to United, lad.

15,000 homes across south London and Surrey woke up with no water after a Thames Water main burst. Schools shut. A local MP says Thames loses 228 Olympic pools of water a day to leaks and is "no longer fit for purpose."
Nationalise it yet?

The Order says 1807 gives it a right to Garvaghy Road. The Order was founded in 1795. The Boyne was 1690. Irish history on that land is thousands of years older. A 200-year parade through someone else’s street is not “heritage.” It’s a veto dressed up as tradition.

The Orange Order says it has a “historic right” to march Garvaghy Road because it has walked toward Drumcree since 1807.
1807. That is not history. That is a footnote.
The Order itself was founded in 1795 after a sectarian clash at the Battle of the Diamond. The victory it celebrates, the Boyne, is 1690. The plantation that put that politics in Ulster is early 1600s. Even on its own terms, this “ancient tradition” is a few centuries of settler commemoration.
Irish history on the same ground is older by thousands of years. Newgrange was already ancient when Rome was young. Gaelic kingdoms, language, law and land tenure were here long before William of Orange was born in the Hague. St Patrick was preaching in Ireland more than a thousand years before the first Orange lodge existed.
So the argument is this: a fraternity younger than the United States claims a public road through a nationalist neighbourhood because it once used a rural track that later filled with Catholic housing. That is not respect for history. That is treating other people’s street as a trophy.
A public road is not an Orange relic. Residents live there. Consent is not optional just because your sash is old.

Avanti West Coast goes into public ownership from March. Years of cancellations, delays and overcrowding, and passengers paid the price.

The court cleared the march. The Orange Order asked police to "enforce the law". By tonight the crowd at Drumcree had gone home.
Garvaghy residents held their road all day. Still no parade. So who really decides?

It's the opposite. Garvaghy Road is fighting to keep its kids out of what the 90s did to theirs.
Drumcree was banned in 1998 for a reason. Those summers brought riots across the North, and in July 1998 the three young Quinn brothers died in a sectarian arson attack in Ballymoney at the height of the stand-off.
It isn't about waving. It's a march of Orangemen down a nationalist residential road that doesn't want it. The Orange Order has 1,000s of routes and parades freely almost everywhere. This one road said no, and for 28 years it stayed peaceful.
Who revived the drama? Not the residents. The Parades Commission reversed a ban that had held since 1998. Even the Taoiseach called that "incomprehensible and wrong."
If you want the next generation free of this, leave the ban where it was.
