During bilateral talks on the sidelines of the AU Extraordinary Summit in Accra, I reiterated Ghana’s call for the African Union to formally address the escalating xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa. I am pleased that AU Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has acknowledged the urgent need to table this matter for discussion at the next AU Summit.

In my meeting with a special envoy dispatched by President Cyril Ramaphosa to meet with me in Accra earlier in the week, I made Ghana’s position clear to the envoy. We do not harbour ill will toward South Africa. However, we remain deeply concerned about the attacks and the significant capital losses suffered by people from various countries on the continent.

This undermines the very spirit of African solidarity and our collective efforts toward continental integration.

Sweeping this matter under the carpet will not resolve its root causes. That is why Ghana officially wrote to the AU Commission requesting that this issue be placed on the agenda for the next summit.

Placing this on the AU agenda gives South Africa a formal, constructive platform to share its perspective, and together, as a continent, work toward a lasting solution.

Let us remember that our strength as a continent lies in our unity. Ghana remains committed to working with all AU member states to find lasting solutions that protect the dignity, safety, and investments of every African, everywhere on our continent.

The governor of the Bank of Ghana @DrJPAsiama earlier this evening at the 130th MPC Press Briefing announced that the policy rate has been maintained at 14%. This is despite the impact of the ongoing geopolitical tensions on the Ghanaian economy. The 130th Monetary Policy Committee meetings begin on Monday 18th May 2026, and conclude on Wednesday 20th May 2026 with the announcement of the Monetary Policy Rate decision.

Earlier today, President John Dramani Mahama assented to the bill establishing the Office for Value for Money.

This office will help stop the inflation and padding of contracts, strengthen accountability, and ensure that the Ghanaian taxpayer gets real value for every pesewa spent.

The Office for Value for Money will pay for itself through the savings it will generate by reducing wasteful expenditure and improving efficiency in public procurement.

Most importantly, it will create fiscal space that can be redirected into critical sectors of the economy, including infrastructure, health, education, and social protection.

This is another important step in our efforts to strengthen public financial management, protect public resources, and ensure fiscal discipline.

President Mahama recognised this as a national emergency. The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is our response. The Fund is a dedicated, well-funded vehicle to provide financial relief and world-class specialised care to every corner of Ghana

The Fund seeks not only to support patients financially, but also to improve infrastructure, build specialist capacity, support medical research, and position Ghana as a leader in equitable and compassionate healthcare reform in Africa

The Trust Fund is financed through 20% of the National Health Insurance Levy, government budgetary allocations, voluntary contributions, grants, investments, and generous donations from patriotic institutions and individuals – Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku; Administrator, Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
