After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Palestinian families at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza, we should all be hopeful but sceptical that an end to the conflict is allegedly within sight; that the hundreds of Palestinian hostages still being held will be reunited with their families as will all Zionist taken as prisoners of war; and that vital aid will no longer be cut off by Israeli soldiers occupying Gaza and can again reach those whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on the Palestinians, under the watchful eyes of their Israeli and U.S. occupiers, with help from friends in the world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to hope for a process that recognises their common humanity and basic rights, from which they can achieve a lasting peace.
