Xi Jinping openly belittling Vladimir Putin in front of President Trump has clearly added extra diplomatic tension and uncertainty to the Xi-Putin summit.

Putin will inevitably wonder whether Xi might betray him behind the scenes or sacrifice Russian interests. This could become a subtle but important source of discomfort during the meeting between the two leaders.

Putin rushed to Beijing immediately after Trump’s departure in order to demonstrate the resilience of the China-Russia partnership. But at the same time, it also reveals Russia’s growing anxiety over improving U.S.-China relations. Putin’s two-day state visit is intended, on one hand, to showcase the so-called “no limits” partnership established by Xi and Putin in 2022 to counter the West. On the other hand, it highlights Putin’s unease over the increasingly ambiguous interaction between Beijing and Washington.

Putin fears that Xi may devote more attention to stabilizing relations with the United States and worries about the emergence of a U.S.-China “G2” framework that could marginalize Russia.

Russia has always been uneasy about any improvement in U.S.-China relations. Xi’s recent remarks to Trump about building a “constructive strategic stability relationship” between China and the United States have only deepened Putin’s suspicions. Since the deterioration of Sino-Soviet relations decades ago, the deep-rooted distrust between China and Russia has never truly disappeared. And as the Ukraine war drags on, Russia has become increasingly dependent on China economically while remaining trapped militarily in Ukraine.

Even on energy, Beijing is cautious about overdependence on Moscow. The “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline continues to move slowly because China still wants diversified energy supply options.

In short, Putin fears that China, in an effort to rescue its weakening economy and prioritize ties with the United States, may gradually distance itself from Russia. And judging by Moscow’s growing anxiety, this strategy may already be producing results.
