💠 For the first time, the #Census will be conducted digitally, and for the first time, the option of Self-Enumeration will also be available

💠 Self-enumeration from 1st to 15th April and House Listing and Housing Census from 16th April to 15th May 2026 to be conducted in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, and Sikkim

➤ Census is a Union subject and is listed at serial number 69 in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. The legal framework governing it is provided by the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990

➤ The Census Act contains a significant provision Section 15 under which personal information provided is treated as strictly confidential. It cannot be made public under the RTI Act, used as evidence in any court of law, or shared with any institution

➤ States and Union Territories play a crucial role in this process; their entire administrative machinery is mobilised to complete fieldwork at the grassroots level

➤ The previous census was conducted in the year 2011. Census 2027, 16th Census in the series and 8th since independence

➤ Census - 2027 will be conducted in two phases:

Phase 1: House Listing and Housing Census (HLO)
Phase 2: Population Enumeration (PE)
