More than just a riverside landmark, Suriname Ghat is where thousands of untold journeys began.
Between 1873 and 1916, thousands of Indian indentured labourers departed from this historic ghat, leaving behind their homeland and loved ones to undertake a long and uncertain voyage to Suriname. Carrying little more than hope and resilience, they crossed the oceans in search of new opportunities, laying the foundation of a vibrant Indo-Surinamese community that continues to preserve its Indian heritage to this day.
To honour this extraordinary chapter of history, the Mai-Baap Memorial was unveiled at Suriname Ghat, Kolkata, in 2015. Inspired by and created as a replica of the iconic Baba and Mai Monument in Paramaribo, Suriname, it stands as a lasting tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and perseverance of the indentured labourers who embarked on their historic journey from this very riverfront.
Today, the memorial not only commemorates their legacy but also celebrates the enduring cultural and historical ties between India and Suriname. It reminds us that Suriname Ghat is more than a place on the banks of the Hooghly—it is a symbol of shared heritage, resilience, and a friendship that spans continents.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Celebrates Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s 125th Birth Anniversary with Twin Maritime Milestones

On the 125th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, whose vision and legacy continue to inspire the nation’s progress, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) marked the occasion not merely with remembrance, but with action—celebrating two landmark achievements that will strengthen India’s maritime and logistics ecosystem.

⚓ A Historic Maiden Call at Kolkata Dock System

History was created today as M.V. Nawata Bhum, represented by Chakiat Shipping, became the first container vessel to berth at the newly developed Berths 7 & 8 at Netaji Subhas Dock, operated by JSW Infrastructure under a Public-Private Partnership.

The vessel is scheduled to discharge 249 TEUs and load 295 TEUs, handling a total of 544 TEUs during its maiden call, heralding the beginning of a new era of world-class container operations at Kolkata Dock System.

This is only the beginning. @TheJSWGroup Infrastructure has also been entrusted with the development of the Outer Berth Project, which will be the first Outer Berth in the history of @SMPort_Kolkata. Together with the ongoing modernisation of other berths, these projects will significantly enhance capacity, efficiency and global competitiveness of the Port.

⚡ Haldia Powers India’s Energy Logistics

On the same day, #HaldiaDockComplex scripted another success story with the successful rejuvenation of the fully mechanised Thermal Coal Handling Berth-3, reaffirming SMPK’s commitment to efficient, sustainable and cost-effective logistics.

The mobilisation of @easterncoal Limited coal for Southern power utilities has commenced, with the first railway rake expected to arrive on 7 July 2026, opening a new logistics corridor connecting Eastern India’s coalfields with thermal power plants across the southern region.

Equipped with a rapid wagon tippler, mechanised conveyor systems and high-capacity ship loaders, Berth-3 offers one of the most competitive thermal coal handling solutions among all ports on India’s Eastern Coast.

The integrated rail-to-sea logistics model enables end-users to leverage lower railway freight for transporting ECL coal to Haldia, followed by economical coastal shipping to power plants—reducing logistics costs while supporting India’s growing energy needs.

A Living Tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee

These two transformational milestones are more than operational achievements—they are a tribute to the ideas of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who believed in a strong, self-reliant and progressive India.

As the Port proudly bearing his name celebrates his 125th Birth Anniversary, it reaffirms its commitment to driving port-led development, modern infrastructure, public-private partnerships, coastal shipping and logistics excellence, contributing meaningfully to the vision of #ViksitBharat and Maritime India.

🌊 Midnight on the Hooghly: A River Writes History

Last night, the ancient Hooghly stirred awake under a velvet Kolkata sky and did what no one had ever seen before.

At 04.30 hrs on 25 April 2026, at Diamond Harbour Anchorage, the river became a floating stage. While the city still slept, a quiet revolution unfolded on its dark waters.

Export containers, fresh from the inland barge Waterways 1, rose into the air — one by one — and settled gently onto the deck of the mighty MSC Andrea F.
No berth. No jetty. Just the open river, a self-propelled floating crane named Shreeji Samruddhi, and the unwavering determination of a team that refused to let the night win.

Under the guidance of Chairman *Shri Rathendra Raman,* and in the presence of DMD, TM & Secretary, SMP Kolkata, the first-ever midstream container handling operation at KDS came to life.

This single night cracked open an entire new chapter for SMP Kolkata :

✅ Gearless vessels can now call at Diamond Harbour’s natural draft and handle containers midstream.
✅ Exporters and shipping lines save precious rupees on ocean freight.
✅ Vessels turn around faster. Containers move quicker.
✅ SMP Kolkata gains a powerful new weapon — without waiting for a single extra berth to be built.

And the real magic? This is only the beginning.
Link it with the extended gate at Balagarh Multimodal Terminal. Containers now flow straight from the hinterland, glide down the inland waterways, gather at Balagarh, then leap onto mother vessels waiting in the Hooghly’s embrace — a true river-to-ocean highway, untouched by conventional port congestion.

The Hooghly has always been more than a river. It is memory, commerce, legend. Last night, it became the future.
A heartfelt salute to the warriors of Shreeji Shipping Pvt Ltd who fought through every technical storm and never gave up.

The river always has one more story to tell.
And this one just changed the game.

26.01.2026 - Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata celebrated the 77th #RepublicDay at Kolkata as well as Haldia with pride, unity, and patriotic fervour, honouring the Constitution and the spirit of the nation’s resolve.

In Kolkata, Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairperson, SMPK, hoisted the Tricolour, highlighted SMPK’s achievements and its key role in #NationalTrade in his address. He inspected the CISF parade, commending the personnel for their dedicated service as vigilant protectors of the port and the public.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata takes a major step forward towards maritime modernization with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji laying the foundation stone virtually in 20.9.2025 at Bhavnagar, Gujarat for two landmark projects at Kolkata Dock System. The reconstruction and mechanization of Berths 7 & 8 at NSD along with the integrated development of the Outer Container Terminal and Berths 1 to 5 under the DBFOT model through PPP mode, will transform cargo handling capacity, enhance trade efficiency, and open new avenues for growth.

The foundation stone was laid at Bhavnagar in the august presence of Union Minister of @shipmin_india Shri @sarbanandsonwal ji, Minister of State, MoPS&W, Shri @Shantanu_bjp ji and Chairperson of SMPK Shri Rathendra Raman. Shri @RahiSamrat, Dy Chairperson, SMPK, along with key officials and stakeholders witnessed the remarkable moment virtually from Kolkata.
