If I had to describe my mentor Manohar Parrikar in one word, it would be ‘Integrity’. He did not allow politics to corrupt him. He did his best for Goa and India. I am grateful to him because I took keen interest in nation building because of him. He may not be with us today but I am sure he is watching over us.

However, my wife did not feel comfortable sitting in front of such a person and continued to stand while speaking to him. She did not pay heed even after he requested her to sit down twice again. Sensing her discomfort in sitting in front of him, @manoharparrikar stood up. The whole conversation between my wife and @manoharparrikar, that lasted 5-7 minutes, happened with both of them standing. While leaving, he instructed my wife to reach out to him directly, if I was getting lost in my work and wasn’t giving her enough time (9/10).

Since I did not belong to Goa, he advised me to stay in one room in the CM’s residence, instead of me availing an official residence. And he used to pay the state government for the food and electricity I used to consume, from his own pocket. Despite me pleading several times, he refused to allow me bear that expense (6/10).

During both my stints with him, I stayed in his official residence – this was to ensure that I could report to him at 07:00 AM every morning, as was demanded by him. And as a Defence Minister, his residence was bare bones with minimal furnishing. His fellow cabinet colleagues, and senior government and military officials who visited his residence were surprised to see such frugality. He neither had any member of his family living with him, nor did he have a full-time cook (4/10).

I did not know @manoharparrikar before I started working for him. But that did not stop him from allowing me to enter his inner circle. He was an open book, with a squeaky-clean persona and absolutely nothing to hide. Critical thinking skills, competence and commitment to clean governance, and progressive policy making were the only criteria that he demanded from his staff. He despised ‘yes’ men - the more someone disagreed with him, the more endearing such a person became to him (3/10).
