Ethiopia was never colonized.
For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent.
Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity.
If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true.
Can we please retire this excuse?
This is not Dubai.
This is Ethiopia, whose GDP is 24 times smaller than India’s.
However, its cooperation with China has made its infrastructure 24 times better than that of India and even some higher-income countries.

🇪🇹 Vision of the Prosperity Party
The Prosperity Party aims to build a prosperous, democratic, and united Ethiopia through strong institutions, inclusive economic growth, social development, national unity, and protection of sovereignty.
Mayors in Somaliland shouldn’t have to go all the way to Europe for training in city infrastructure development. The solution is right next door.
Our local governments should partner with our closest neighbour, who has impressed the whole African continent over the past few years
I now see tons of posts like this from people in various developing Asian and African countries, comparing photos like these. For example, they show Addis Ababa in Ethiopia or Pyongyang and compare them to much richer countries with 2x–5x higher GDP per capita but worse urban infrastructure.
More people are seeing this and getting angry at their politicians, or simply envying their neighbors, which puts pressure on local leaders to act faster.
Ultimately, this will lead to faster improvement and development.
This is a very good, positive, viral trend here on X.
