@_Deez_Games Don't know if you saw it, but if a digital game has a physical release, it's between 40 and 60% sells in physical. Here's the tweet https://t.co/zYaa1U4vvM
"But but but 85% of PlayStation games sold are digital!"
Did you ever stop to think how many of those are digital only games? 99% of indie games will never see a physical edition because of production costs. Mina The Hollower has sold 500k copies and likely won't get a disc.
You will get a wildly different result if you remove all the games that don't have a physical version.
Let's say 100 games release in 2026, all have a digital and physical version, there's not a chance in hell that 85% of the sales will be digital. You're lying to yourself if you believe they would be.
I don’t have any issue with people not outraged with the disc situation because they don’t buy physical.
The real confusing ones are those seemingly defending the decision, acting like PlayStation’s PR team.
This is a decision that doesn’t benefit you at all, why defend it?
In response to trends in the gaming industry, as of April 1st 2027, I will stop going to Square Enix to work physically and appear digitally only.
Employees will be able to download the Tetsuya Nomura APP on their devices with my code 42069 and have me tell them what to do.
@mrpyo1 95% of people drive cars vs motorcycles, get rid of motorcycles?
84%-86% of people wash clothes at home, get rid of laundromat?
60%-80% of people prefer physical books, get rid of ebooks?
Its fucking stupid!
Just to show you how scummy Sony is being with this news.
They anticipated their numbers would drop through people protesting/boycotting by canceling Ps Plus and pre-orders but they won't have to show their numbers to investors until the end of September.
Their next earnings call is July 31st however it only covers up to June 30th. They planned this out perfectly to drop it on July 1st for this very reason. The numbers dip early July, they have over 2 months to watch them HOPEFULLY recover as the deperate gamers crawl back and the investors see that Sony moving away from physical games didn't hurt anything.
Keep this is mind as we move forward. Sony is betting on you caving and crawling back to them in the coming weeks. Oh and so are the investors.
It’s always been a big cash grab scheme for Sony. Remove the option that benefits consumers the most, include drm so you can revoke it whenever you want and charge whatever stupidly high price you want.
"80% of PlayStation games sold are digital, nobody cares about physical"
Oh really?
Ghost of Tsushima, 40% physical
The Last of Us Part 2, 40% physical
Uncharted 4, 80% physical
Death Stranding, 60% physical
Anyone saying 80% is lying. That figure includes DLC to inflate figures.
What's really interesting is only 36% of a unit sales is digital, but 59% of the net sales in dollars is digital. That means each digital copy brings in 2.6 times the revenue of a physical copy. In other words, if Sony decides to make their next game digital only and ends up selling half as many copies, they'd still make more money. They have fiddled the numbers because overall, when we factor in downloads, microtransactions, DLC, subscription, PC, mobile, yes digital is king but if you look at "bigger" game titles it's just a lie.
You're welcome!

This is a reason why Nintendo won’t be getting rid of physical media anytime soon.
Physical media is still very important in Japan and Japan is still very important to Nintendo.
