President Trump could have called for elections, negotiated with legitimate leadership in Venezuela, and secured the country’s oil concessions with the legitimacy and backing of 90% of the Venezuelan population.
Instead, he chose to negotiate a deal with Delcy Rodríguez behind the backs of the Venezuelan people—one that I believe will have an enormous negative impact on the United States for decades to come. In doing so, he has handed the anti-imperialist Latin American left a powerful weapon that they will use to win elections for decades, turn populations against the United States, and, in turn, once again push the majority of Venezuelans against the United States.
For decades, many people, myself included, argued that the United States was a better strategic and economic partner for our countries than China, Russia, or Iran because it respected the rule of law, institutions, and democracy. Today, given what has just happened, it will be extremely difficult to make that case.
I insist that, after January 3, President Trump was seen as a hero by the vast majority of Venezuelans and by a large portion of Latin Americans. That image has changed dramatically over the past few months, and the way this deal has been handled will only make the situation worse.
It is deeply unfortunate, because President Trump could have achieved an equally favorable outcome for the United States while also having the backing of the Venezuelan people. He only needed to change the interlocutor. Now, I don’t see how this can be fixed, and I believe that, politically, this will greatly benefit communists and socialists—the true enemies of the United States—across the region.
Secretary Marco Rubio: You have just lost any trust Venezuelans ever had on you, and it will come to haunt you. You opted to use US power, not to free Venezuelans, but to go to bed with our oppressors. You opted to push an asset grab, an unconstitutional deal with an illegitimate oppressive government, instead of using US leadership to re-establish constitutional rule and democracy first, and then deal with a legitimate government that could have made credible long-term commitments, in due course. This announced deal will not stand. Delcy, contrary to what you boss just stated [see below] is not "highly respected" by any Venezuelan I know, or by any American outside of the Mar-a-lago kleptocracy. She has no legitimacy or constitutional power to commit Venezuela to any such deal. Venezuelans will not respect this illegitimate deal and no major US oil company will take it seriously because they know it will not last. No wonder you are using wanted criminals - like Alejandro Betancourt - to make this shameful deal. You are also preventing our leader - Maria Corina Machado - from returning to Venezuela, and you have conspired to delay elections and the return to democracy. Shameful.
María Corina Machado reflects on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, President Trump and tells CBS News' @lilialuciano the honor belongs to all Venezuelans fighting for freedom and dignity. https://t.co/9bh8rtdb23
“On Friday in Oslo, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Machado, who has been in hiding ever since last year’s fraudulent elections, is widely regarded as the force keeping the country’s opposition alive in the face of Nicolás Maduro’s increasingly authoritarian regime. Machado, the committee said, is a ‘brave and committed champion of peace,’ who ‘keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.’
Machado’s story is a political thriller come to life. A 58-year-old industrial engineer and former member of parliament, she spent two decades as the most relentless opponent of Hugo Chávez and his successor, Nicolás Maduro.
Once derided by the regime as la dama de hierro (the Iron Lady), she was banned from running in the presidential election. She then named a proxy and led a grassroots campaign that united the country’s shattered opposition, drawing millions of Venezuelans to the polls in July 2024 and winning a landslide victory.
But Maduro’s regime seized power anyway, and began accelerating its crackdown on dissent. Fourteen months later, Machado is in an undisclosed location and fears for her life. She still addresses her followers through encrypted video messages and clandestine radio transmissions, seeking to oust the undemocratic regime that has transformed Venezuela into a hub of international crime.
And now, she’s been elevated to the global stage. Following the Nobel announcement, Machado wrote on X: ‘This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom.’ She continued: ‘[T]oday, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.’ ”—@JoJakubowicz
