Black folks know this, but I need everyone else to understand it too.
The term ‘woke’ came from the Black community. It was about being informed, educated, and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality.
Fast forward to now: it’s been hijacked by the right and used as a weapon and slur against us. That’s why I’ve left the word behind.

I don't know how many times I watched this scene.
Even the guy who swore he would never salute a black negro female soldier, had no option but to salute the Six Triple Eight Battalion led by Captain Charity Adams!!!!
He doesn't agree because he doesn't stand on his word. This is a principle my dad lived by. He used to say, "As a man, if I don't have anything else, I have my word. Therefore, I must be a man of my word." If he said he was going to do it. He did it. Every. Single. Time. And that's something we knew we could depend on.
Slavery wasn't 500 years ago. Slavery wasn't 100 years ago
The trauma and harm of Slavery and Jim Crow is modern day just as the the propensity to traumatize and harm is present to this day.
Changing the laws didn't change the mindset.
