Engineer at a big tech company built a tool that finds viruses by ignoring every known virus, and a biotech firm bought it outright
Every discovery pipeline searches by similarity, which means it can only find things that resemble what's already in the database.
His tool never compares sequences, it looks for the structural signature of something being read and copied, whatever its letters happen to be:
> Fold: raw reads are modelled by the shape they'd produce, not the text they contain
> Match: shapes that behave like replication or translation machinery get flagged
> Rank: the ones with no sequence relative anywhere go to the top, not the bottom
• Why similarity search was always a ceiling
> A genuinely new family shares no sequence with anything catalogued
> The more novel something is, the lower it scores on every existing tool
> Decades of archives were searched with a method that filters out the new
• What the first pass turned up
> Ribosome-like structures in samples labelled as containing nothing
> Several candidate families with no relatives in any public database
> A pile of hits in data that had been sequenced, searched and shelved in 2014
One archive gets re-searched by structure in about six hours.
And the part that broke my brain:
The samples weren't new. They'd been sequenced, searched and found empty years ago.
The search was the thing that couldn't see them.
Same data. One method only finds what it already has a name for.
The limit was never the sequencing.
It was asking what does this look like instead of what does this do ↓
⚡ Nikola Tesla was right. The universe isn’t solid — it vibrates.
Quantum physics now shows reality is built not from matter, but from vibration and waves.
Nikola Tesla once said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
Far from a metaphor, his insight aligns strikingly with what modern physics has revealed. At the quantum level, reality isn’t made of solid particles but of vibrating energy fields.
Every particle—from electrons to protons—has its own frequency, and these wave patterns determine everything from chemical bonds to the colors we see. Light, heat, and sound are all forms of energy defined by vibration and frequency.
Even spacetime itself isn’t still. In 2015, scientists confirmed that black holes can create ripples—gravitational waves—that travel across the cosmos, carrying energy through the very fabric of the universe. Tesla may not have had the equations, but his intuition was remarkably prescient: everything, from atoms to galaxies, moves in patterns of vibration and resonance.
"If we say God made the universe, then surely the next question is, "Who made God?"
If we say God was always here, why not say the universe was always here?
If we say that the question "Where did God come from?" is too tough for us poor mortals to understand, then why not say that the question of "Where did the universe come from?" is too tough for us mortals?"
~ Carl Sagan
🤯 What Happens When You Drop a Bowling Ball and Feathers in a Vacuum? The Result Is Mind-Blowing!
Inside NASA's enormous vacuum chamber, scientists remove the air and drop a bowling ball and feathers at the same time.
Without air resistance, they fall together and hit the ground simultaneously, beautifully demonstrating a principle Galileo explored over 400 years ago! ⚡
Did you expect the feathers to fall just as fast as the bowling ball?
As Republicans suffered a landslide defeat and Texas elected its first Democratic governor, one of the biggest losers of the US midterms was not on the ballot: Elon Musk, who had spent nearly half a billion dollars to back Republican candidates nationwide https://t.co/eupRaqXRcm
President Trump will protect Elon Musk!
“I was worried about Elon Musk, because he is one of our great geniuses, and we have to protect our geniuses, he is one our very smart people and we wanna cherish those people”
-President Trump
